Runners, dog lovers and costumed kids are heading to Forsythia Crossing Park in Middletown Township on Oct. 31, where the Foot Pursuit 5K is a Halloween-themed fundraiser for the police department's K9 unit. The race includes a timed 5K run and a 1-mile fun run for children, alongside kids' activities, a costume contest and a K9 demonstration.
The event is presented by the Middletown Township Police Department. The department's promotion frames the race as a chance to “chase a cause” while supporting its K9 unit.
That framing differs slightly from how the fundraiser's purpose was described elsewhere. According to the Bucks County Herald, all funds from the Foot Pursuit 5K will benefit the department's K9 unit and go toward training the canines already on the force.
What the K9 Unit Actually Does
The K9 unit performs a range of specialized work. The Herald reports the department's K9 unit is comprised of five highly trained canines, two of which are cross-trained in bomb detection and two of which are trained in drug detection. Those dogs track missing people and find articles and evidence, and the department has told the paper that a canine is working around the clock.
The Herald's report also notes that the race has a somewhat bumpy history: the department brought the fundraiser back in 2021 after a pandemic-era hiatus, and the comeback run wasn't very well attended. Saturday's Halloween-themed revival appears aimed at drawing a bigger crowd with costumes, a kids' course and a live K9 demonstration built into the morning.
A Longer Community Push for Police Dogs
The Foot Pursuit 5K isn't the only effort propping up Middletown's K9 program. Per LevittownNow, the Middletown Community Foundation has raised enough over the years to fund seven police dogs for the township, including the department's newest dog, CJ, whose purchase the foundation said cost approximately $80,000, maybe a little more. The outlet also reported that the foundation's next K-9 fundraiser is scheduled for early fall.
