IndyCar is heading back to the Milwaukee Mile for a fourth consecutive year, with the series confirming a doubleheader weekend set for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 28-29, 2027. The announcement locks in one of two Wisconsin stops on next year's schedule, giving the historic West Allis oval another shot at championship-stretch drama as the season winds down.
The 2027 return marks the third IndyCar doubleheader held at the Milwaukee Mile since the series brought racing back to the track, according to a report from jsonline.com. The Milwaukee Mile itself is described by indycar.com as a legendary 1-mile oval that opened in 1903, and the series says the pivotal weekend will give drivers two opportunities to earn valuable championship points over a single trip to Wisconsin. Reporting on the schedule release, the Milwaukee Business Journal noted the stop keeps the track on the series calendar for a fourth straight year.
The 2027 doubleheader slots into a 17-race NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship that wraps up Sept. 5 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, per indycar.com's schedule announcement. All races next season will once again air on FOX in the United States, continuing a broadcast arrangement now entering its third consecutive year, the same release states.
Two Wisconsin Dates on the 2027 Calendar
Wisconsin fans will get two chances to see IndyCar next year: Road America on June 27 and the Milwaukee Mile doubleheader at the end of August. The Wisconsin State Fair Park, which operates the Milwaukee Mile, says its 2027 Snap-on INDYCAR Weekend will kick off Friday, Aug. 27, with racing activity continuing through the Saturday and Sunday INDYCAR events, according to wistatefair.com. The fairgrounds has not yet opened sales for the weekend — renewals and tickets for the 2027 doubleheader are expected to become available in spring 2027, the same source notes.
Last year's opening 250-lap race at the Mile produced a season-high 696 on-track passes, per indycar.com, a number IndyCar has pointed to as evidence the oval still delivers tight, competitive racing. The 2026 doubleheader also produced a historic result: Pato O'Ward swept both races in a single day, becoming the first IndyCar driver to do so since 1981, as reported by channel3000.com.
A Weekend That Moves the Local Economy
IndyCar's return to the Mile isn't just a racing story — it's an economic one for the Milwaukee area. The 2024 Milwaukee Mile 250s Weekend, the track's first appearance on the series schedule since 2015, drew 42,025 fans over three days and generated an estimated $41 million in local economic impact, according to a report published on urbanmilwaukee.com. That same event supported 360 direct and indirect jobs and an estimated $13.4 million in labor income, the report found.
More than 64% of attendees that year traveled over 50 miles to reach the track, a sign the race pulls heavily from beyond the Milwaukee metro, per the same urbanmilwaukee.com report. A separate economic analysis from uww.edu found that entertainment, hospitality and restaurant sectors absorbed the largest share of the employment impact, with 168, 79 and 73 jobs respectively tied to the event. The same analysis found more than 80% of surveyed attendees said they planned to return to Milwaukee either for the race weekend alone or for the race weekend plus other visits during the year.
Wisconsin State Fair Park has also pointed to facility upgrades behind the scenes, saying more than $3 million in track improvements were invested in the infrastructure ahead of the 2025 INDYCAR weekend, according to the urbanmilwaukee.com report. On the broadcast side, the second race of the 2024 Milwaukee Mile 250s weekend averaged 735,000 viewers on USA Network, per figures compiled by uww.edu.
Series Leadership Points to Momentum
Penske Entertainment CEO Mark Miles framed the 2027 slate as building on a record year for the series, pointing to viewership gains, a younger fan base and growing commercial interest, according to channel3000.com. Those broader trends have coincided with the Mile's return to relevance on the IndyCar calendar after nearly a decade away, with the track now set to host its fourth straight season of racing.
For now, specifics on next year's field, ticket pricing and the exact on-sale date remain unannounced, with Wisconsin State Fair Park pointing only to a spring 2027 window for renewals and new ticket purchases. The 2026 season already has its own Milwaukee Mile doubleheader set for Aug. 29-30, according to indycar.com's earlier schedule release, meaning West Allis racing fans have back-to-back summers of IndyCar action to look forward to before the 2027 event arrives.
