Two people, including a Brevard County Sheriff's deputy, were killed in a crash in Mims on Sunday, Titusville Mayor Andrew Connors announced. Connors called it “a heartbreaking morning” as he shared the news that the unincorporated North Brevard community had lost a law enforcement officer and one other person in the collision.
According to WKMG, Connors announced two deaths in the crash, including a Brevard County deputy.
Mims sits just north of Titusville along U.S. Route 1 and State Road 46, an unincorporated community of roughly 7,300 residents, according to data cited on its Wikipedia entry.
First Responders Praised Amid a Difficult Morning
Connors thanked the first responders who handled Sunday's incidents, saying they acted with courage and commitment.
A Corridor With a Troubled Safety Record
Sunday's crash adds to a string of severe traffic incidents along the U.S. 1 corridor in northern Brevard County. A Mims resident was arrested in connection with an October 2025 hit-and-run crash that killed a 61-year-old motorcyclist on the same roadway.
Statewide, Florida drivers were involved in 205 crashes and received more than 17,500 citations in 2024 for failing to move over for stopped emergency and service vehicles, a violation covered under Section 316.126 of the Florida Statutes, the state's Move Over Law, which requires drivers to vacate the lane nearest a stopped emergency or disabled vehicle or slow to 20 mph below the posted limit.
It is not yet known whether a move-over violation played any role in Sunday's crash, and officials have not released further details about how the collision occurred.
Echoes of a 2018 Line-of-Duty Death
Sunday's loss recalls the February 2018 death of Brevard County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Stanton, who was killed in the line of duty on Interstate 95 when a tractor-trailer suffered a tire blowout and struck his patrol vehicle, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. Stanton had served with the Sheriff's Office for more than a decade at the time of his death.
A former Titusville police chief was cited for careless driving after crashing a city SUV, WKMG reported.
Connors, Titusville's mayor, has issued a public message about crash-reporting issues.
