A man riding a black mini-bike is in critical, unstable condition after running a stop sign and slamming into a gray Chevy Trailblazer in St. Louis’s Greater Ville neighborhood on Friday morning. The driver of the Trailblazer was uninjured, while the mini-bike rider was rushed to a hospital by EMS.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, District 6 officers were called to the intersection of Ashland Avenue and Lambdin just after 11:30 a.m. on October 2. Police say the unidentified adult male mini-bike rider was heading west on Ashland Avenue when he violated the stop sign at Lambdin and collided with the Trailblazer. The crash was also reported by First Alert 4.

Police confirmed the Trailblazer’s driver was not injured in the collision. The mini-bike rider was not as fortunate — he was taken to an area hospital where he was listed in critical, unstable condition, per the department’s statement.

Reconstruction Unit Takes Over Investigation

SLMPD’s Accident Reconstruction Unit was requested to the scene and has assumed the investigation, the department said. No further details about the rider’s identity, age, or the extent of his injuries have been released.

Under Missouri law, riders of bicycles and motorized bicycles on public streets are granted the same rights and are held to the same duties as drivers of motor vehicles under Chapter 304, according to the Missouri Revisor of Statutes, subject to specific statutory exceptions. It remains unclear whether the vehicle involved in Friday’s crash meets that statutory definition.

Not an Isolated Incident

Mini-bike crashes have drawn attention elsewhere in the state this year. In May, a juvenile riding a mini-bike was seriously injured in a nighttime crash in Independence, Missouri, according to KSHB. No additional details connect that incident to Friday’s crash in St. Louis.

No further updates on the mini-bike rider’s condition have been released as the SLMPD Accident Reconstruction Unit continues its work.
