A man in his 20s is dead after the minibike he was riding collided with a red SUV on Moncrief Road in Northwest Jacksonville, marking the 125th traffic fatality in Duval County this year. The crash happened at about 3:45 p.m. near 45th Street, and the rider was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, the driver of the red SUV was attempting to turn left onto 45th Street from Moncrief Road and did not see the man riding north before hitting him, as reported by Action News Jax. Jacksonville Fire Rescue transported the man to the hospital, where he died, and News4JAX reports that the Sheriff's Office is still investigating the case to determine who was at fault. Traffic was briefly disrupted at the intersection, though the lanes have since reopened.
A Grim Milestone for Duval County Roads
The crash is the 17th fatality this year involving a motorcycle in Duval County, part of a death toll that has climbed steadily through 2026. The same roughly-even pace of motorcycle deaths compared to the prior year was noted in March, when a motorcyclist died after losing control of a Suzuki and striking a pole near Raines Vikings Way, according to the same account from the station's report.
That March crash came amid a string of similarly deadly incidents on Jacksonville roads. In February, a motorcyclist in his late 40s died at the scene after hitting the rear of a car hauler at Soutel Drive and New Kings Road, one of three deadly crashes involving motorcycles or minibikes that News4JAX counted within a single week.
Moncrief Road's History With Minibike Crashes
Moncrief Road and the surrounding Northside corridor have seen fatal minibike wrecks before. In September 2025, a 49-year-old man died after his mini-bike crashed into the back of a box truck near Mays Street and 45th Street, just blocks from Thursday's crash, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Safety officials have pointed to speed as a leading factor behind the city's rising traffic deaths. Officer Jason Corse has said speed causes the majority of traffic fatalities in Jacksonville, according to Jax Today. A corridor study from the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization has also recommended repurposing lanes, adding buffered bike lanes, and filling sidewalk and ADA gaps along Moncrief Road, as detailed in Hoodline's prior Moncrief Road coverage.
Minibikes and E-Bikes a Growing Concern
Fatal and serious minibike crashes have not been limited to Jacksonville's Northside. In St. Johns County, a 12-year-old child was hit and killed by an SUV while riding a minibike in a crosswalk near Patriot Oaks Academy, with a 17-year-old identified as driving the SUV involved. Doctors at Wolfson Children's Hospital have also tracked a 222% increase in injuries related to e-bikes and e-scooters from 2023 to 2024, with early 2025 data suggesting those injuries were on track to double again.
No details have been released about the identity of the minibike rider killed Thursday or the driver of the SUV. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has not said when its investigation into fault will conclude.
