A woman who vanished during a camping trip was found alive at the bottom of a steep embankment along Cabin Creek in Shasta County, days after she failed to return home. Mary Beth Granbery suffered multiple injuries from the fall and signs of exposure, according to authorities, before a search team located her early this month in rugged, remote terrain.

Granbery was last heard from on Sept. 28 and apparently had left on a camping trip. She was reported missing after failing to return to work on Oct. 2. Family members found her camper van on Oct. 3 at the Cabin Creek Trailhead, according to CBS News, which prompted a joint search by Shasta and Siskiyou county crews.

A Grueling Search Through Steep Canyons

The terrain searchers faced included steep canyons, creeks and downed trees, making the rescue especially difficult, per the same CBS News account. Granbery had apparently gone camping, and searchers faced steep terrain while looking for her.

A search team covering one of the drainages in the area came across her at about 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 4, the outlet reported. She was found near a creek at the bottom of an approximately 100-foot embankment. The search involved crews from Shasta and Siskiyou counties.

Serious Injuries After Days In Wilderness

Granbery suffered serious injuries and showed signs of exposure after days in the wilderness. A California Highway Patrol helicopter airlifted her from the Cabin Creek drainage, and she was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Redding for treatment.

KQMS reported she was in stable condition and expected to recover.

Granbery, 72, was found after a large search effort in remote terrain, days after setting out on a camping trip.
