A mother suffered stab wounds to both shoulders Tuesday afternoon after she stepped outside a Southwest Philadelphia pub to defend her daughter, who was arguing with a man inside the bar. Police say the attacker fled the scene and remains unidentified, leaving investigators searching for leads along the 5300 block of Woodland Avenue in Kingsessing.
According to NBC10 Philadelphia, officers responding to the scene around 4 p.m. found the mother on the roadway suffering from stab wounds to both shoulders, with officials saying the altercation stemmed from an argument at a pub in the area. Officers also encountered a second victim, the woman's daughter, who had suffered cuts to her hands. Police said the mother had overheard her daughter arguing with a suspect inside the pub, exited the building, and was stabbed by the suspect once she stepped outside.
Both victims were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, according to Philadelphia Police Officer Tanya Little, as reported by Daily Voice. The mother was treated for her shoulder wounds and listed in stable condition, while her daughter refused further medical treatment for her injured hands.
Southwest Detectives Lead the Search for a Suspect
The Philadelphia Police Department's Southwest Division secured the scene and is investigating, the same report from Daily Voice notes.
No arrest has been announced, and the suspect's identity and description have not been released. Anyone with information is asked to call or text the Philadelphia Police Department's anonymous tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477).
This is not the first time a dispute inside a Woodland Avenue establishment has spilled into violence. In February 2023, an argument inside a neighborhood bar on the same stretch escalated into a shooting outside that left a woman dead, according to FOX 29 Philadelphia.
Under Pennsylvania law, intentionally causing or attempting to cause bodily injury with a knife can be charged as aggravated assault, a felony that carries up to 10 or 20 years in state prison depending on how the offense is graded, according to Fairlie & Lippy, P.C.
