A 30-year-old history teacher at L.E.A.D. Academy in Montgomery is facing multiple felony charges after police say he sold prescription pills to a student inside his own classroom, then was found with a loaded handgun and additional narcotics in his car. Langston Carter was arrested on Thursday after officers responded to the charter school, and the school has since fired him.

According to court records cited by the Montgomery Advertiser, Carter allegedly sold a student two hydrocodone pills, with the transaction allegedly taking place in his classroom. The student told officers he paid $10 for the pills after Carter had allegedly offered to sell them to him on multiple occasions, according to WSFA. Court documents say the student lacked a Cash App account of his own, so he got another student's help to send the payment to Carter's girlfriend's Cash App account before Carter handed over the pills.

The pills the student received were later found to contain 5 milligrams of oxycodone hydrochloride and 325 milligrams of acetaminophen each, per court records. Investigators went on to verify the transaction, court filings indicate, according to the same WSFA report.

Lockdown Followed Police Response to the Campus

L.E.A.D. Academy placed students on an immediate lockdown Thursday afternoon at the direction of the Montgomery Police Department, the school said, to ensure the integrity of the investigation, the Montgomery Advertiser reported. Carter was taken into custody at the school on Oct. 22, according to al.com. He had taught high school history at the school, according to its website, and has since been terminated.

A K-9 officer conducted an open-air sniff outside Carter's vehicle and the dog indicated the presence of narcotics, al.com reported. A subsequent search turned up a sling-style bag in the trunk containing marijuana, a digital scale and other narcotics-related items, the outlet noted. Per WSFA's account of the court documents, that bag held 6.9 grams of marijuana, 18.9 grams of mushroom-infused gummies, a digital scale, empty plastic bags, 19 additional 5 mg oxycodone hydrochloride pills, and a loaded Beretta 9 mm handgun.

Felony Charges and a $300,000 Bond

Montgomery police said Carter faces multiple felony charges. Those charges include possession of a firearm on school property, two counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, and first-degree possession of marijuana, al.com reported. He remained held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility on bonds totaling $300,000, according to the outlet.

WAKA reported that L.E.A.D. Academy had announced the arrest of one of its teachers. KCTV also covered the arrest as it drew wider attention beyond Montgomery.
