A motorcyclist was flown to a trauma center Sunday morning after a crash with a passenger vehicle on Highway 74 at Tenaja Truck Trail, south of El Cariso, according to fire officials. Firefighters arriving on scene found the motorcycle and its rider down, along with a small vegetation fire burning nearby.
The collision was reported at 9:37 a.m., according to a post from CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department
, which said crews responded to reports of a traffic collision involving a passenger vehicle and a motorcycle. Upon arrival, the department said, firefighters located the motorcycle and its rider down at the scene.
The injured rider was transported by medical helicopter to an area trauma center, the fire department reported. The small vegetation fire found near the crash site was contained, and the incident was then turned over to the California Highway Patrol for investigation.
A Familiar, Dangerous Stretch Of Road
The Tenaja Truck Trail intersection on Highway 74, also known as Ortega Highway, has seen repeated serious crashes involving motorcyclists over the years. Just over a year earlier, in August 2025, a motorcyclist suffered moderate injuries in a crash at the same intersection and was airlifted to a nearby trauma hospital, the fire department's account of that incident shows, as reported by Patch. That crash also temporarily closed Ortega Highway in both directions.
Not every crash along that corridor has resulted in severe injury. A 2024 collision near State Route 74 and Tenaja Truck Trail left three patients treated at the scene with no serious injuries reported, according to the California Highway Patrol's account relayed by Valley News. In a separate incident reported by the same outlet, a motorcyclist was airlifted to a regional trauma center following a collision with a passenger vehicle on Ortega Highway.
History Of Fatal Crashes In The Corridor
The winding mountain route has also seen fatal outcomes. In August 2017, a head-on crash between an SUV and a motorcycle on Ortega Highway west of Lake Elsinore turned deadly, according to the Press-Enterprise. That crash was reported just before 10 a.m., near the same Tenaja Truck Trail area where Sunday's collision occurred.
No details on the rider's identity, age or condition beyond the helicopter transport have been released, and the cause of Sunday's crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. Information about road closures or how long the highway may have been affected was not immediately available.
