A motorcyclist died Tuesday evening after a crash on Interstate 476, the Blue Route, in Radnor Township, near a ramp connecting to Route 3, West Chester Pike. Fire and EMS radio traffic reported the dispatch at 6:35 p.m., and the Delaware County Medical Examiner's Office was sent to the scene.
According to the Delco Times, the first call described the rider as apparently deceased, but crews approaching the scene were then told the rider was still breathing. Responders performed CPR for some time, the outlet reported, but it was ultimately unsuccessful. Northbound traffic was expected to remain delayed at the scene well into Tuesday night, and Pennsylvania State Police will handle the investigation, per the same account. The Daily Times, the paper notes, plans to seek the official account of the incident from troopers.
Route 3 Construction Near I-476 Interchange
Route 3 Construction Near I-476 Interchange PennDOT's $5.2 million project to improve traffic flow, restripe ramps, and reconfigure signals in Marple and Haverford townships was underway, but the scheduled overnight lane restrictions on Route 3 near its interchange with I-476 were set to begin at 7 p.m., after the 6:35 p.m. dispatch, according to PennDOT.
Other stretches of I-476 have experienced congestion, with peak-hour speeds dropping to 30 to 40 mph. The agency is separately advancing a Flex Lanes project for the corridor, planned for construction between 2028 and 2031, that would convert inside shoulders into dynamic travel lanes and add adaptive ramp metering between Route 3 and I-95 to help manage congestion and incident response.
Pennsylvania Motorcycle Fatalities
Statewide, motorcycle fatalities actually fell last year. Pennsylvania recorded 2,927 motorcycle crashes and 186 motorcyclist deaths in 2025, an 11.2% drop in collisions and a 14.7% decrease in fatalities compared to 2024, per PennDOT data.
Whether the rider was wearing a helmet has not been disclosed; under Pennsylvania Vehicle Code Title 75 Section 3525, riders 21 or older may legally ride without one if they have held a motorcycle license for at least two years or completed a state-approved safety course, according to FindLaw.
A Corridor With a Troubled Recent Record
Tuesday's death follows a serious incident along this corridor: Hoodline previously reported on a dump truck veering into a closed lane on northbound I-476 that killed a 28-year-old Conshohocken man.
Despite the local toll, statewide traffic deaths overall dropped to record-low levels in 2025. Impaired-driving fatalities totaled 342 in 2024. Pennsylvania recorded 1,127 people killed on its highways in 2024, a decrease from the prior year. Police had not released the motorcyclist's name.
