A motorcyclist suffered major injuries Monday afternoon when two vehicles collided near 7th and R streets in downtown Sacramento, prompting police to shut down the intersection while they investigated. The adult rider was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment following the crash.
According to KCRA, officers responded to reports of the crash just after 4:20 p.m. near the intersection, finding that a motorcycle was one of the two vehicles involved. As FOX40 reported, the Sacramento Police Department responded to the collision and officers closed the intersection near the crash site while the investigation continued.
Officers advised drivers to avoid the area while they worked the scene, and the road closures remained in place near 7th and R streets as the investigation unfolded. The motorcyclist was hospitalized with major injuries and was in stable condition.
A Pattern of Serious Crashes Across the City
Monday's crash adds to a worsening trend tracked by Sacramento police. The department's own data shows the city recorded 49 crashes resulting in serious injuries or deaths in 2024, up sharply from 28 in 2019, per the same KCRA report. That rise comes even as the city pursues its Vision Zero Action Plan, adopted in 2018 with the goal of bringing crashes involving serious injuries or deaths down to zero by 2027.
Safety infrastructure projects can take a long time to deliver. Arden Way is the focus of a safety and mobility plan supported by a Caltrans planning grant.
Not an Isolated Incident
Monday's downtown collision follows other recent motorcycle crashes reported around Sacramento. In a separate incident near Northgate Boulevard and Bridgeford Drive, officials said a motorcycle and a vehicle collided, and the motorcyclist was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to FOX40. No cause has been established for Monday's crash at 7th and R streets, and FOX40 identified the second vehicle as a black sedan.
