A motorcyclist was killed after being ejected during a crash with a Mercedes-Benz near Mirabel Road and Giusti Road in Forestville Thursday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol's Santa Rosa Area Office. CHP officers responded to the scene at 6:09 p.m., finding a Mercedes-Benz that had stopped on Giusti Road before attempting to cross the intersection toward Davis Street when it collided with a northbound motorcycle on Mirabel Road.
Investigators said the motorcyclist struck the front of the Mercedes-Benz and was thrown from the bike, and the rider was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel, according to KRON4. The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office Coroner's Office has not released the rider's identity. Preliminary findings reported by California Injury Accident Lawyer indicate the northbound motorcyclist had the right-of-way on Mirabel Road when the Mercedes-Benz driver pulled out from the Giusti Road stop sign directly into the bike's path.
Investigators also said the motorcyclist was speeding at the time of the crash, per the same preliminary account. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement, and emergency crews implemented a hard road closure near Speer's Market around 6:20 p.m. Thursday to divert traffic while CHP investigators examined the scene, the outlet reported.
A Collision Point With a Deadly History
This is not the first fatal crash at this exact intersection. In November 2013, a vehicle stopped at the Giusti Road stop sign pulled into the path of an oncoming motorcycle at the same location, killing rider Gregory Dahl, according to Healdsburg Patch. The two crashes occurred at the same intersection more than a decade apart.
Under California Vehicle Code Section 21802, a driver approaching a stop sign must yield the right-of-way to any vehicle that has already entered the intersection or is approaching so closely as to constitute an immediate hazard, according to the Fassonaki Law Firm. That statutory duty exists alongside the preliminary account of excessive motorcycle speed, and it remains unclear how CHP's final determination will weigh the two factors as the investigation continues.
Residents Had Already Flagged the Danger
The majority of Mirabel Road between Highway 116 and River Road carries a posted speed limit of 45 mph, dropping to 35 mph as it nears River Road, per 2025 project specifications from the Sonoma County Transportation Authority.
The Mirabel Road Corridor Improvements project includes a designated left-turn lane at the Giusti Road and Davis Road intersection along with Class 2 bike lanes.
Motorcycle Fatalities in California
California recorded 583 motorcyclist fatalities in 2023, about 14 percent of all traffic deaths statewide, per California Office of Traffic Safety data.
