A motorcyclist has died after colliding with a vehicle in South San Jose, according to police, who shut down all lanes in the area while they investigate. Police asked drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
According to NBC Bay Area, police received a call around 11:48 a.m. about a crash involving a vehicle and a motorcycle near McKean Road and Almaden Road. The motorcyclist was taken to a local hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries, police said. The driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene, per the same report.
A CBS News San Francisco report published April 3, 2025, described a separate collision at McKean Road and San Vicente Avenue in Almaden. CBS reported that all lanes in the area were closed because of that crash, with no immediate estimate given for when the roads would fully reopen.
Road Closures Snarl Traffic Near Almaden
Police placed road closures near the scene and asked drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes, the station's report noted. The scope and duration of those closures beyond the immediate aftermath have not been detailed publicly.
Details about the identities of the motorcyclist and the other driver have not been released, and it remains unclear whether any citations or charges have resulted from the crash. The exact cause and sequence of events leading up to the collision also have not been disclosed.
A Pattern of Fatal Motorcycle Crashes in San Jose
This is not the first fatal motorcycle collision San Jose has seen this year. In March, the San Jose Police Department responded to a crash at Blackford Lane and Meridian Avenue in which a 2004 Yamaha motorcycle traveling southbound struck a 2014 Mazda CX-5 that was turning left onto westbound Blackford Lane. That motorcyclist was also transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died, while the Mazda driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigators. Police said that crash marked the city's ninth fatal collision and ninth traffic death of 2026.
Motorcycle fatalities have drawn statewide attention as well. The California Office of Traffic Safety has reported that 583 motorcyclists were killed in crashes on California roads in 2023, a 10.2 percent decrease from the 649 killed in 2022. The agency says the 583 deaths in 2023 represented a nearly 19 percent increase from 491 in 2019.
No further updates on the condition of the surviving driver or the status of the investigation into Sunday's crash have been released. Hoodline will continue to follow developments as police release more information.
