A 30-year-old Mount Carmel man is dead after his motorcycle left Snydertown Road in Upper Augusta Township, struck a utility pole and threw him from the bike. Troy Tafner was not wearing a helmet when the crash happened, and he was later pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital.
State police said Tafner was headed south on Snydertown Road when he exited the west side of the roadway and hit the pole, according to fox56.com. He was ejected from the motorcycle in the crash, and investigators said his speed at the time is not known. Tafner was taken to Shamokin Geisinger Hospital, where he died from his injuries, as reported by 2822news.com.
Pennsylvania State Police at Stonington are investigating the crash, which happened on Snydertown Road near Zimmermans Hollow Road, according to The Shenandoah Sentinel. The roadway was shut down for about two hours following the crash as troopers worked the scene.
Conflicting Accounts of When the Crash Happened
Exactly when the crash occurred remains unclear, with reports differing on the timing. The Shenandoah Sentinel's reporting places the crash at 12:14 a.m., and fox56.com similarly describes Tafner as traveling south on Snydertown Road just after midnight. But 2822news.com's account says the motorcycle slammed into the pole around 2 a.m., a discrepancy that has not been resolved in available reporting.
This is not the first fatal crash state police have investigated on that stretch of road. In May 2024, an 18-year-old Mount Carmel girl was killed on Snydertown Road after her vehicle left the roadway about two miles east of Sunbury, according to dailyitem.com.
A Broader Pattern of Motorcycle Fatalities in the Region
Tafner's death adds to a string of recent motorcycle fatalities reported across the region by the same outlet. A 19-year-old Bloomsburg man was killed in a motorcycle crash on Route 339 in Main Township, and a separate crash atop Locust Mountain in Mahanoy Township killed a Mahanoy City man and shut down Route 339 between Mahanoy City and Brandonville, the Sentinel reported in earlier coverage.
Statewide, Pennsylvania saw 2,927 motorcycle crashes in 2025, according to state figures published by pa.gov. Motorcycle occupant fatalities across the commonwealth actually fell from 219 in 2024 to 186 in 2025, per state crash data. PennDOT also maintains a public crash information tool with multi-year statewide and county-level crash statistics for residents who want to track local trends.
No additional details about the investigation, including whether any citations have been issued, have been released as of this report.
