Teams of amateur engineers will once again hurl empty keg barrels from a 20-foot platform this month, as the 10th annual OBX Brewtag returns to Nags Head on October 24. The free festival blends beer, flight history, and backyard-contraption bravado into one of the Outer Banks' quirkiest fall traditions.
OBX Brewtag celebrates flight and beer, with contestants competing to launch an empty 1/6 keg barrel as far as possible. This year's competition takes place at The Soundside Event Site, 6800 S. Croatan Highway, Nags Head.
The idea traces back to Germany's Red Bull Flugtag, a human-powered flight festival that Nags Head organizers adapted in 2015 into a keg-launching spinoff, according to the OBX Travel Guide by Carolina Designs. Teams build homemade machines to launch an empty keg as far as possible.
Honoring the Rogallos' Aviation Legacy
Proceeds from the event benefit the Rogallo Foundation, a nonprofit founded in 1992 to preserve the legacy of flexible-wing inventors Francis and Gertrude Rogallo and to fund construction of a permanent Rogallo Museum on the Outer Banks, according to Dare A250. The Rogallos made aviation history in 1948 when they successfully flew a flexible wing design tested in a homemade wind tunnel, laying the aerodynamic groundwork for modern hang gliders, paragliders, and stunt kites, the Carolina Designs guide notes.
That local history helps explain why a goofy keg-flinging contest carries real civic weight on the Outer Banks. The 10th Annual OBX Brewtag also received grant support from America 250 NC, a program of the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, tying the local event to statewide celebrations of the U.S. Semiquincentennial, Dare A250 reports.
Competition Rules and Past Winners
Under rules updated in 2024, teams pay a $150 registration fee and compete in either the Rogallo Class, for fixed-wing designs, or the Unlimited Class, for open designs, with a limit of four members aged 18 or older allowed on the Flight Deck during launch, according to Outer Banks Vacations. Safety inspections happen the morning of the event before crafts receive flight clearance, per OBX Brewtag's own rules page.
Last year's 9th annual event, held October 25, 2025, drew 14 teams across the two divisions. Team Dare County RC Flyers took the top distance overall at 118.1 feet, while HQ Kites won the Rogallo Class with a distance of 71 feet, according to OBX Brewtag's event recap.
Getting There and Getting a Drink
General spectator admission remains free, and attendees over 21 can buy a $30 Brewcard good for four full pours from an expanded beer garden featuring a wide selection of local and regional beverage producers, per the same recap.
Because waterfront parking is limited, shuttle service is available from Nags Head Elementary and Whalebone Park, with departures approximately every 30 minutes or less. The Outer Banks Outlet Mall offers parking but no shuttle service.
Kitty Hawk Kites presents OBX Brewtag, alongside local sponsors including Seaside Vacations; the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau was listed as a 2025 presenting sponsor, per Outer Banks Vacations. More details on registration and schedule are available at obxbrewtag.com.
