A Royal Street resident in St. Francisville woke up to find a naked stranger touching her forehead and called police on October 20, setting off an investigation that ended with officers detaining a Mississippi man they say had broken into a nearby church earlier that night. The man, identified as 49-year-old Heath Alan Brumfield of Vicksburg, Mississippi, now faces multiple charges tied to both incidents.
According to WBRZ, Brumfield allegedly entered the woman's home through an unlocked door without her consent. Officers eventually arrived at the residence and detained him there, the station reported.
Investigators said Brumfield was found with a fire extinguisher that was later traced back to St. Francisville United Methodist Church, located near the home. Surveillance footage reviewed by police reportedly showed him entering the church hall and removing the extinguisher earlier that same night, per the station's report.
Medical Evaluation and Booking
After he was taken into custody, Brumfield was evaluated by medical professionals, the outlet noted. He was first booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison as a fugitive before authorities transferred him to the West Feliciana Sheriff's Office Detention Center.
At the West Feliciana facility, Brumfield was booked on charges of simple burglary, simple battery and unauthorized entry to an uninhabited dwelling, per the same account.
What Louisiana Law Says About the Charges
Under Louisiana's criminal code, a conviction for simple burglary can carry a fine of up to $2,000 and imprisonment with or without hard labor for up to 12 years, or both, according to the Louisiana Legislature. Simple battery, meanwhile, is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both, as outlined by the Louisiana Legislature.
No arrest report, booking record or court filing has been made publicly available to independently verify further details of the case, and it remains unclear whether Brumfield has entered a plea or retained an attorney. St. Francisville residents are left with an unsettling morning and a string of unanswered questions about what led a stranger from across the state line to their neighborhood that night.
