Nelly says Taylor Swift once called him out of the blue, flew him from St. Louis to Houston, and paid him $50,000 in cash stuffed inside a McDonald's bag just to join her onstage. The rapper laid out the wild story during a recent sit-down on The Breakfast Club, recalling a 2011 favor that turned into one of music's stranger backstage legends.
According to TMZ, Nelly said Swift rang him up unprompted and asked for a major favor. He recounted the moment to Vice, saying, “She called me one night, just out of the blue.” Swift reportedly sweetened the ask by offering to cover every logistical headache herself, telling him, “What I will do is send my plane. I'll get your room and all of that. And we only have like $50,000.”
Swift allegedly sent a private jet to pick up Nelly and his kids in St. Louis and fly them down to Houston for the show, per the same account relayed to Vice. She also reportedly arranged a presidential suite for the family, with Nelly recalling, “she got us the presidential suite right there. I think it was the Four Seasons.” Those hotel and aircraft specifics come solely from Nelly's own recollection.
The McDonald's Bag Request
Nelly said he had a very specific request for how he wanted his payment delivered. He told Vice that Swift's manager, Robert Allen, handled the handoff directly: “Her manager, Robert Allen, comes out and tosses me a McDonald's bag with $50,000 in cash.” The $50,000 figure has not been independently verified by any receipt or payment record, according to IBTimes UK, which noted the interview aired on The Breakfast Club in an episode published on October 28.
What's less settled is which song the two performed together that night. Nelly has said Swift asked him to perform “Hot in Herre” and that she and her friends had even worked out a routine to the track the night before the show, per TMZ's account. But Complex reported that the pair's surprise duet was actually “Just A Dream,” and Billboard noted that footage aligning with the timing and venue backs that version rather than “Hot in Herre.”
Conflicting Memories of the Crowd
Accounts of the Houston show itself don't fully line up either. IBTimes UK cited contemporary records placing the concert at Minute Maid Park on November 5, 2011, with roughly 42,000 fans in attendance, while Nelly has recalled performing for a crowd of about 56,000. Billboard's reporting similarly places the show in November 2011 during Swift's Speak Now World Tour stop at Minute Maid Park.
Whatever the exact numbers, the one-off favor turned into a recurring collaboration. The two reunited in March 2013 for a performance of “Hey Porsche” during Swift's Red Tour stop in St. Louis, and they teamed up again on September 29, 2015, when Nelly made a guest appearance during her 1989 World Tour, also in St. Louis, according to IBTimes UK.
Nelly has said he and Swift have stayed close in the years since that first favor, and he's described himself as a regular guest at her shows. The friendship carried into this year as well — Nelly and his wife, Ashanti, attended Swift's wedding to Travis Kelce in New York City this past July.
