A new hotel tower rising near Rockefeller Center is asking guests to imagine they have checked into a luxury ocean liner rather than a Midtown Manhattan high-rise. Kimpton Era Midtown New York, a 529-room property at 32 West 48th Street, officially opened its doors in March, and its design team says every guest room was shaped to feel less like a standard hotel box and more like a compact stateroom at sea.
A Purpose-Built Tower With Rockefeller Plaza Views
The hotel occupies a purpose-built tower overlooking Rockefeller Plaza, according to Dezeen. Rooms start at $450 a night, per a PR Newswire release announcing the opening. Sources differ on the building's exact height: that same release describes a 33-story skyscraper designed by Extell Development Company, while a 2025 report from New York YIMBY described the structure as a 31-story Kimpton hotel tower nearing completion.
Interiors came from INC Architecture & Design, a local studio marking its 20th anniversary this year, while SLCE Architects handled the building's architecture, Dezeen reports. INC founding partner Adam Rolston told Hospitality Design that the goal was a room that feels more like a stateroom on an ocean liner than a conventional hotel room, a design philosophy echoed throughout the property.
Guest Rooms Built Like Ship Cabins
Dezeen reports that INC designed each of the hotel's guest rooms to emulate a stateroom on an ocean liner, drawing on references spanning New York City itself, uptown elegance, downtown grit and classic ocean-liner luxury. The rooms are laid out as compact ship cabins, with white-oak walls that fold beds, desks and storage into single built-in furniture elements, according to the same report. Neutral color palettes are offset by jewel-toned fabrics and brass accents, and bathrooms use wet-room-style layouts with frosted, blackened metal-framed sliding glass doors that help conserve space.
Hotel executive Louisa Revitte said the property presents its guest rooms as staterooms and its dining rooms as ocean-liner salons, reinforcing the nautical throughline across the building, per Dezeen. Hillary Kroll, another figure involved with the project, said Kimpton Era captures New York's layered character inside a purpose-built skyscraper at Rockefeller Center, according to the same report.
A Fluted Atrium And Sweeping Staircase
The hotel's public spaces lean into dramatic architectural gestures. Dezeen describes a triple-height fluted-concrete atrium anchored by a blackened-steel-and-glass staircase that coils around a ceiling-hung mobile of organic forms. Materials throughout include marble, brass, leather, glazed ceramics, concrete and blackened steel, the outlet reports, while elevator lobbies are defined by cerused wood, terrazzo borders and diffused lighting. The lobby itself centers on a tiered black-marble reception counter.
Dining Concepts With Dueling Counts
Dezeen's report describes five dining venues at Kimpton Era, including a Latin American eatery that spans from the ground floor to the cellar with terracotta walls and ceramic pendants, a second-floor brasserie featuring banquette seating, paneled walls, a scarlet ceramic bar and mosaic floors, and a third-floor lobby cafe serving coffee by day and cocktails by night. A rooftop bar inspired by Chinatown dining rooms rounds out the list, outfitted with a tomato-red counter, tiled portals, temple-like joinery and hand-painted lotus motifs.
The hotel's own opening release, however, counts things differently: it states that restaurant and bar operator Apicii runs four distinct destination concepts, and that a rooftop Asian izakaya called Jade Rabbit, offering 360-degree Manhattan city views, was slated to open in April. The dossier notes that published counts of the hotel's dining operation vary across sources — Apicii's four concepts, a three-restaurant tally on IHG's own listing, and a two-concept count reported elsewhere — and whether every planned venue, including Jade Rabbit, ultimately opened on schedule has not been independently confirmed.
Fitness, Fit-Out And INC's Other Local Projects
Beyond the dining rooms, the hotel includes a 24-hour, 1,375-square-foot gym stocked with Peloton bikes, yoga mats and cardio equipment, according to the PR Newswire release. INC's résumé elsewhere in New York includes the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge Park, completed with Marvel Architects, and event spaces at the TWA Hotel inside Eero Saarinen's JFK Airport terminal, Dezeen reports. The studio has also completed interiors for a restaurant inside BIG's The Spiral skyscraper and designed its own concrete-forward offices filled with eclectic furniture and plants.
Part Of A Crowded Construction Pipeline
Kimpton Era's debut lands amid a wave of new hotel construction across the city. Lodging Econometrics counted 29 New York City hotel projects totaling 5,689 guestrooms under construction as of March, according to Hospitality Design, with more than 20 additional hotels expected to open citywide before the end of the year. Hotel Dive has reported that New York City was projected to lead the nation in new hotel-room openings for a second consecutive year in 2026, though that projection carries lower confidence than the construction tallies from Lodging Econometrics.
