A 22-year-old New Market man died Thursday morning after his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of Spotswood Trail and New Hope Road in Rockingham County. Virginia State Police identified the victim as Xavier Smith, who was riding a 2018 Yamaha motorcycle east on Spotswood Trail when the crash occurred around 10:35 a.m.

According to WHSV, Smith was traveling at a “high rate of speed” when a 2026 Toyota pickup truck attempted to cross Spotswood Trail from New Hope Road. The motorcycle struck the side of the pickup, and Smith was ejected into the median, the station reported. He was taken to Sentara RMH Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, as reported by Rocktown Now.

Pickup Occupants From South Carolina Uninjured

The driver and passenger of the pickup, both from Pawleys Island, South Carolina, were not injured in the crash, the station's report noted. Virginia State Police have not released their names. The crash remains under investigation, and no additional details about potential charges or a final determination of fault have been released.

This is not the first fatal motorcycle crash Virginia State Police have investigated in Rockingham County this year. In July, 41-year-old Cristian Fuentes Pizarro of Grottoes died after his motorcycle ran off the right side of Oak Shade Road and went through a fence, according to the same outlet's earlier coverage. Fuentes Pizarro, who police said was also traveling east at a high rate of speed, died at the scene, and that crash likewise remained under investigation.

Statewide Motorcycle Fatalities Trending Lower

Rockingham County's second fatal motorcycle crash this year arrives amid a broader statewide picture that has shown some improvement. Virginia had recorded 24 motorcycle fatalities as of April 30, compared with 30 over the same period in 2024 and 32 in 2025, according to the Daily Progress. Despite the modest year-over-year decline, incidents like Thursday's crash underscore that intersections where high-speed through traffic meets crossing vehicles remain a persistent risk for riders.

Virginia State Police continue to investigate the circumstances of Thursday's crash. No further information about the cause has been released.
