A new three-story medical plaza just opened its doors in Tupelo, Mississippi, bringing something the region has never had before: a dedicated pediatric urgent care clinic open all seven days of the week. The $25 million North Mississippi Medical Center Crossover Medical Plaza spans 46,500 square feet and consolidates urgent care, dermatology, and eye and retina specialty clinics into a single building at 718 Crossover Road.

Birmingham-based contractor Robins & Morton completed the project, as reported by AL.com. The pediatric urgent care clinic keeps extended hours families can actually use: weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 5:45 p.m., according to a post from Team Tupelo.

A One-Stop Hub for Outpatient Specialty Care

Inside the plaza, Med Serve and Urgent Care Kids occupy Suite 101, while North Mississippi Retina Center sits in Suite 201, Dermatology Consultants in Suite 202, and North Mississippi Eye Care on the third floor in Suite 301, per North Mississippi Health Services. That third-floor eye clinic recently gained a new physician: ophthalmologist Dr. Ashley Horn Pickering joined North Mississippi Eye Care in August, expanding regional treatment options for cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, the health system notes.

North Mississippi Health Services broke ground on the project in April 2025, according to AL.com, a timeline also reported by WTVA. The health system says the new plaza is making it easier for families across north Mississippi to access high-quality care close to home, per the same report. Ashley Dyer said the facility will support the community's healthcare needs for many years to come, while Shane Spees said the plaza represents a commitment to meeting patients with the right care at the right time in the right setting.

Easing Pressure on a Regional Hospital Giant

The new plaza is designed to take pressure off North Mississippi Health Services' flagship campus, North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, which holds 640 inpatient beds and ranks as Mississippi's second-largest hospital overall and the largest non-metropolitan hospital in the country, according to Hospital Management. The parent health system operates five community hospitals and more than 40 clinics.

Robins & Morton, a Birmingham-based contractor, completed the project. The project's design came from McCarty Architects.

Part of a Broader Outpatient Construction Push

Healthcare construction has continued well beyond Tupelo. In May, Jordan Foster Construction served as general contractor and delivered the Mariposa Medical Office Building in Westover Hills, San Antonio. Robins & Morton was among the partners building out the broader Westover Hills medical campus, part of a cross-town care cuts commute times trend of health systems building localized outpatient hubs. Separately, a $563 million BayCare Hospital Manatee project in Palmetto, Florida, topped out. The project dwarfs the Tupelo build in scale but reflects the same industry shift toward decentralized care.

For Tupelo-area families, the practical upshot is simpler than the national trend lines: urgent care, pediatric urgent care, dermatology, and eye and retina specialists are now available under one roof at 718 Crossover Road, seven days a week for the youngest patients.
