A gunpoint robbery near 8 City Terrace in Newburgh last week ended with a foot chase through backyards and over fences before officers cornered the suspect blocks away with a loaded handgun. Police say 38-year-old Poughkeepsie resident Carlos Diggs is now facing felony charges in connection with the October 22 incident.

According to Daily Voice, officers responded to the reported gunpoint robbery near 8 City Terrace, and the suspect reportedly fled toward First Street afterward. Detectives soon spotted someone matching that description riding a scooter near First Street and Carpenter Avenue, the outlet reported. When they attempted to stop him near 69 Grand Street, the suspect abandoned the scooter and took off on foot.

Chase Through Yards Ends Near First Street

What followed was a scramble through residential backyards and over multiple fences, the report notes, before officers finally caught up to Diggs near 114 First Street. Authorities said the pursuit covered several properties before it ended. Police recovered a loaded Derya 9mm semiautomatic handgun containing three rounds following the arrest, per the same account.

The City of Newburgh Police Department announced Diggs's arrest on Tuesday, according to the report, several days after the incident itself. He has been charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both of which are felonies. Under New York State Senate records, first-degree robbery is classified as a class B felony.

Part of a String of Recent Newburgh-Area Robberies

This arrest lands amid a string of robbery cases that have kept the Hudson Valley's courts busy this year. In September, Mid Hudson News reported that Newburgh police were investigating a stabbing that left a man injured during an attempted robbery. That same outlet reported in April that a Kingston man wanted for an armed robbery in Newburgh was later arrested at a Saugerties motel, and just days before Diggs's case became public, two 16-year-old boys were arrested in Haverstraw in connection with separate gunpoint robberies targeting taxi drivers.

Newburgh has also seen bigger, multi-agency cases this year. Hoodline previously reported on a Newburgh Mall robbery that ended with federal charges after one suspect was caught at a Fishkill Dollar General. Together, the cases underscore how frequently armed robbery allegations in and around the city have drawn in multiple police jurisdictions over the past several months.
