A mother and her 12-year-old son were rushed to the hospital early Thursday after the boy jumped from a second-floor window to escape a house fire in Philadelphia's Nicetown section. Firefighters arriving at the scene found flames pouring from the second floor and people hanging from windows as they worked to get everyone out.
According to 6abc Philadelphia, fire crews were called to West Erie Avenue by Sydenham around 1:30 a.m. Thursday. The 12-year-old boy suffered airway burns, smoke inhalation and injuries from the fall after leaping from the second floor, while his mother was treated for smoke inhalation, the station reported.
Firefighters rescued six people from the burning building, and crews managed to bring the fire under control in about 15 minutes, per the same account. The cause of the fire has not been determined and remains under investigation.
A Separate, More Severe Fire Reported in the Same Neighborhood
CBS News reported a fatal fire in Nicetown on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, more than two years before the West Erie Avenue fire on Thursday, October 29, 2026. According to CBS News, one person was killed and eight people were taken to the hospital after a blaze on the 1900 block of Dennie Street, with crews responding just before 2:15 a.m.
CBS reported that investigators believe that fire started on the first floor of a three-story home where 12 people were living. A man believed to be around 60 years old was found dead on the first floor, according to the outlet. A 38-year-old woman was hurt after jumping from the second floor, and a 24-year-old man suffered smoke inhalation, CBS reported.
CBS News also described a dramatic rescue in which a neighbor helped an 18-year-old mother, her infant, five other children and three adults escape through a third-floor bedroom window. The outlet reported the cause of that fire remains under investigation as well. The fires occurred on different nights: the CBS-reported blaze was in April 2024, while the West Erie Avenue fire occurred in October 2026.
Nicetown's Recent History With Deadly and Destructive Fires
This would not be the first serious fire to hit the Nicetown section in recent memory. In March, a pre-dawn blaze tore through at least three rowhomes on the 3700 block of Park Avenue, an incident Hoodline previously covered. Crews got that fire under control in roughly 30 minutes with no reported injuries, though the city's Department of Licenses and Inspections later declared the damaged properties unsafe.
A far more destructive fire struck the neighborhood in June 2025, when a fire and explosion caused three rowhouses to collapse and killed one person, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. Two women, ages 82 and 62, were hospitalized in that incident, and between 100 and 125 neighborhood residents, including at least 25 children, were evacuated, the Inquirer reported.
Investigators have not yet determined the cause of Thursday's fire, and key details — including the full conditions of everyone hospitalized and, in the CBS-reported blaze, the identity of the man who died — remain unverified as the investigation continues.
