Nordstrom is planting its off-price flag in Canton, Michigan, with a new Nordstrom Rack store set to open at New Towne Center off Ford and Sheldon roads this fall. The 35,000-square-foot location marks another step in the retailer's push to grow its discount business even as a rival luxury chain retreats from the same corner of the market.
A New Address at New Towne Center
Nordstrom first announced plans for the Canton store in the spring, saying the location would be part of New Towne Center, a shopping complex owned and managed by Acadia Realty that also houses Sally Beauty, GNC and Nothing Bundt Cakes, according to Nordstrom. As reported by Crain's Detroit Business, the store is expanding the retailer's metro Detroit footprint. Nordstrom currently operates two Nordstrom stores and five Nordstrom Rack locations across Michigan, supporting more than 750 jobs statewide, per the same release from the retailer.
Shoppers can expect the Canton store to lean on the conveniences Nordstrom has built into its off-price arm elsewhere, including online order pickup from Nordstrom.com and NordstromRack.com along with easy returns, according to PR Newswire. Nordstrom Rack has built its brand around steep markdowns, advertising discounts of up to 70% off on merchandise, the same release notes.
Timing and Location Details
USA Today has listed the Canton store's opening for Oct. 29 at 44740 Ford Road, the same address where the former JoAnn Fabrics location once stood, per USA Today. Social House News has separately reported that the Canton Nordstrom Rack is proposed as the new tenant for that former fabric-store space. The two accounts point to the same stretch of Ford Road becoming home to the retailer's newest Michigan outpost.
The Canton opening isn't an isolated move. Nordstrom Rack planned to open 20 new stores across 15 states between Aug. 20 and Nov. 5, following four earlier openings this year as the company continues investing in its off-price business, the same USA Today report states. Chain Store Age has put the broader 2026 lineup at 23 stores nationwide, though an earlier snippet from the same outlet in March cited a lower count of 22 stores for the year — a discrepancy that remains in the public record.
Expansion Against a Shrinking Rival
Nordstrom's bet on off-price retail stands in contrast to troubles at a major competitor. Nordstrom Inc. continues to grow the footprint of its off-price division as Saks Global steps back from the business, according to Chain Store Age, which also reported that Saks Global is closing the majority of its Saks Off 5th stores — 57 locations — along with four Last Call stores. The pullback leaves more room in the discount retail space just as Nordstrom Rack pushes into new markets, including another Canton — this one in Ohio, at The Venue at Belden, part of the same 2026 opening lineup.
Closer to home, Nordstrom is also reshuffling existing Michigan locations. The company plans to move its Nordstrom Rack Baldwin Commons store about one mile down the road to Great Lakes Crossing Outlets, according to Crain's Detroit Business. Between the Canton opening and the Baldwin Commons relocation, Nordstrom's off-price arm is actively reshaping where Michigan shoppers will find its discounted racks in the months ahead.
