A student production from Norfolk State University won Netflix’s A Different World Challenge after drawing more than 11,000 votes, putting the university’s Campus Life team ahead of nine other HBCU finalists.
Norfolk State University was the champion in a national challenge presented by Netflix and HBCU Buzz, according to WAVY.com. The contest, known as the A Different World Challenge, asked HBCU students to showcase campus culture, traditions, friendships and experiences, and Norfolk State's submission rose to the top of the pack.
The winning entry was led by team captain Viviana Muhammad, per HBCU Buzz, which reported that Norfolk State Campus Life earned over 11,000 votes to secure the championship. The outlet noted the challenge invited HBCU student teams to tell their campus stories through their own interpretations of the show's opening sequence, giving each school a chance to reimagine a piece of television history through its own lens.
A Student-Led Vision of Spartan Pride
The submission used scenes of campus life to bring together academics, student relationships, personal style and self-expression, according to HBCU Buzz's finalist preview. The video presented those elements through the lens of Norfolk State's Spartan identity.
On the social platform X, the university's account framed the project as a celebration of identity and community, posting: “We're representing NSU in the ‘A Different World’ Challenge! We reimagined the iconic opening with our own campus-inspired sequence, celebrating Black excellence, community and the HBCU experience.” The same account later urged supporters to keep showing up at the polls, posting, “Vote EVERYDAY until 11:59 p.m. on 9/30.”
The challenge put the finalists’ own depictions of student life at its center, with participating teams presenting distinct views of their campus communities, HBCU Buzz reported.
A Crowded Field of HBCU Finalists
Norfolk State was one of ten HBCU finalists in the challenge. The field included campuses from several regions, giving the competition a national scope, according to HBCU Buzz's results recap.
Why A Different World Still Resonates
A Different World, which ended in 1993, was a spinoff of The Cosby Show set at Hillman College, a fictional HBCU, WAVY.com explained. The station described the sequel as following a child of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, connecting the new story to the earlier series.
HBCU and Sequel Context
The National Center for Education Statistics describes HBCUs as degree-granting institutions established before 1964 with the principal mission of educating Black Americans, subject to certain federal exceptions. It reported total enrollment of 294,316 at degree-granting HBCUs in fall 2014, according to NCES. For the television franchise, Netflix Tudum reports that the A Different World sequel series has been renewed for a second season.
For Norfolk State, the victory offers a moment of national visibility built entirely around student creativity rather than athletics or academics in the traditional sense. The team's reimagined opening sequence put Spartan pride, friendship and self-expression on display for a national audience, and the final vote count suggests it resonated well beyond campus.
