North Augusta's Planning Commission has given the green light to site plans for a new modular manufacturing building at AmbioPharm's facility off Dittman Road, clearing a key local hurdle for a project tied to peptide drugs used to treat diabetes, obesity and other conditions. The commission approved the plans on Oct. 21, moving the long-announced expansion closer to construction.

The approval follows AmbioPharm's announcement in June that it would expand its North Augusta manufacturing facility, a project the company said would cost nearly $119 million, according to Post and Courier. That initial announcement projected the expansion would bring around 200 jobs to the area and come online by the end of 2027.

Since then, AmbioPharm's ownership has changed hands. CordenPharma purchased the company in 2026, and reporting from North Atlanta Star describes the acquisition as completed in August 2026, folding the North Augusta operation into CordenPharma's global manufacturing network. That same reporting describes a North Augusta expansion exceeding $200 million, with more than 200 jobs expected and operations beginning in early 2028 — figures that differ from AmbioPharm's original announcement. The evidence available does not establish whether this is the same project with updated figures or a revised, larger scope, so both versions are presented here rather than reconciled.

A Groundbreaking Already Behind the Project

CordenPharma held a groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion on Sept. 22, according to a statement from the company. That announcement describes the project as adding about 68,000 square feet of purpose-built commercial manufacturing space. The project first became public in June.

The North Augusta plant is designed to support solid-phase peptide synthesis, liquid-phase peptide synthesis and hybrid production methods, per the same North Atlanta Star account. Peptides, which the original site-plan announcement notes are short chains of amino acids similar to those the human body naturally produces — such as insulin, endorphins and growth hormones — can be manufactured for medicine and treatment of diabetes, endocrine disorders and obesity.

CordenPharma said the expansion will support growing demand for peptide active pharmaceutical ingredients used in therapies addressing obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and other conditions. The company also said the South Carolina project will add upstream peptide synthesis capacity to complement its downstream peptide manufacturing operations in Colorado, with the two sites together expected to represent more than $1.4 billion in U.S. peptide manufacturing investment.

Company Has Grown Steadily Since 2006

AmbioPharm has operated at North Augusta's industrial park off Dittman Road since 2006, and the facility has undergone four previous expansions, according to the Aiken Standard reporting that first detailed the site-plan approval. Founded in 2005, the company has long operated as a peptide contract development and manufacturing organization at 1024 Dittman Court, per the Post and Courier's Aiken Standard coverage. The existing operation already employs more than 200 people and produces peptide ingredients at commercial scale, per North Atlanta Star's account.

The scale of this latest expansion dwarfs AmbioPharm's earlier growth at the site. In 2017, the company announced an expansion projected to bring $36 million in new capital investment and create 200 jobs in Aiken County over five years, according to WRDW, while a 2015 expansion totaled $18.8 million and was expected to create 100 jobs over five years, per Area Development. That 2015 project added roughly 40,000 square feet through new manufacturing suites and a headquarters building at the same Dittman Court address.

Executives Point to Accelerating Demand

When AmbioPharm first announced the expansion, Brian Gregg said global demand for peptide therapeutics is accelerating and that dependable U.S. manufacturing is extremely important. Gregg also said the expansion enhances scalable, high-quality production for client-partners and creates skilled-talent opportunities in Aiken County. In the same announcement, he said the company was investing ahead of demand so its client-partners would never have to slow down, framing the project as intended to support partners developing the next generation of peptide therapeutics.

The North Augusta project sits within a much larger industry push. CordenPharma has said it committed about €900 million in 2024 to peptide-manufacturing expansion across the United States and Europe amid rising demand for diabetes and obesity GLP-1 medicines, according to North Atlanta Star. The company operates 11 facilities across Europe and North America and reported 960 million euros in sales during its 2025 financial year, per the Post and Courier's Aiken Standard report. Pharma Manufacturing has reported that the South Carolina expansion is part of a broader network intended to provide dual-site manufacturing options and support technology transfer between CordenPharma facilities.

The Oct. 21 site-plan approval came after construction had already begun following the Sept. 22 groundbreaking.
