A person died following a shooting in north Charlotte on Tuesday afternoon, and police have not said what led to the violence. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating the killing as a homicide after officers and medics were called to the 200 block of West 30th Street. Morris Crawford was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting.
According to WSOC-TV, CMPD confirmed the homicide investigation but said details remained limited as the case developed. The victim was initially rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries before dying, per QC News, which reported that officers responded shortly before 3 p.m. near North Tryon.
Motive Remains Unclear
Morris Crawford was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting. It remains unclear what led to the violence, and police have not released information about a possible motive or how many people may have been involved.
The lack of detail is typical for a homicide investigation in its earliest hours, when departments often withhold information to protect the integrity of the case. CMPD has confirmed the location and that a death occurred.
Part Of A Wider Pattern In Charlotte Homicides
The shooting comes amid a mixed crime picture across Charlotte this year. CMPD recorded 40 homicides in the first half of 2026, compared with 39 during the same stretch of 2025, a roughly 3% increase, according to data reported by QCity Metro. That uptick came even as overall crime fell 16% and violent crime dropped 8% over the same period.
The first quarter of the year showed a sharper homicide increase, with CMPD reporting 22 killings compared with 16 during the first quarter of 2025, a 38% jump, even as overall crime fell 23% and violent crime offenses dropped from 1,357 to 1,108, the same quarter over quarter, according to a separate report from WCNC. Despite the rise in killings, CMPD's homicide unit clears about 75% of all cases, Chief Estella D. Patterson has said, per QCity Metro.
Tuesday's shooting also follows a homicide investigation CMPD opened in July in the 100 block of 30th Street in the city's Metro Division, according to a notice from the City of Charlotte. It is not clear whether that earlier case is connected to this week's shooting on West 30th Street. CMPD has not released further updates on the investigation as of Tuesday night.
