A predawn crash on Houston's North Freeway left a passenger dead after the driver of a black 2026 Hyundai Elantra reportedly abandoned her at the scene and ran away on foot. Carlexia Shields, who was riding in the front right passenger seat, was pronounced dead at a hospital, and the driver remains unidentified.

The crash happened at about 12:30 a.m. in the 19900 block of North Interstate Highway 45, according to ABC13 Houston. The unidentified driver was heading northbound in the Elantra when, per a witness account relayed to deputies, the car drove off the road into a grass median on the east side of the roadway and struck a tree with the front right part of the vehicle.

Deputies said the driver did not stay to help Shields and instead fled the scene on foot, leaving her behind without assistance. An ambulance took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the station's report notes. The Harris County Sheriff's Office said no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Vehicular Crimes Division Takes Over the Case

The Harris County Sheriff's Office Vehicular Crimes Division is now handling the ongoing investigation into the crash and the driver's disappearance from the scene. Investigators have not released a description of the driver, and no arrest has been announced as deputies continue searching for the person responsible.

The case echoes other recent Houston-area crashes involving drivers who left the scene after a passenger was killed. In September, an earlier case covered by ABC13 Houston described a driver fleeing police in Northeast Houston who crashed and left a passenger dead inside the vehicle. That same month, Click2Houston reported that a vehicle fleeing deputies after a parking-lot takeover crashed, killing one person and sending three teenagers to the hospital.

No Suspect Named as Search Continues

No details have been released about the cause of the crash, the driver's speed, or whether the driver and Shields knew each other. The Harris County Sheriff's Office has not provided a description of the driver or said whether anyone has been taken into custody.

Deputies are asking anyone with information about the crash or the driver's identity to come forward as the Vehicular Crimes Division continues its investigation. For now, the person who left Shields behind on the roadside remains unidentified and unaccounted for.
