A man was arrested on suspicion of DUI Friday night after his car blew through a fence on Lakeview Drive in north Fresno and came to rest on a dock just feet from the water. Police said the crash happened around 7 p.m., and witnesses described the car catching air before it slammed down near the shoreline. No injuries were reported.
Officers told YourCentralValley.com that the driver accelerated without realizing a fence stood in his path, sending the car crashing through it before it launched toward the water. Witnesses on scene said the vehicle caught air before landing on the nearby dock, stopping just short of the water itself.
No Injuries Despite Dramatic Landing
Despite the violent trajectory — through a fence, airborne, and down onto a dock — no injuries were reported from the crash, according to police. The driver was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence.
A Fresno State DUI Research Initiative
A research initiative at the university, backed by nearly $140,000 in grant funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety, examined fatal DUI crashes across 12 Central California counties using data spanning 2010 through 2023, according to Fresno State. The university reported that in 2023, the region recorded 6.05 DUI deaths per 100,000 people, compared to California’s statewide rate of 2.62 per 100,000. GV Wire has separately reported different rate figures, attributing the data to Fresno State and the Central California Public Health Consortium; the figures should not be treated as interchangeable.
Fresno State’s research identified Friday through Sunday between 5 p.m. and 3 a.m. as the highest-risk window for these crashes — a timeframe that lines up with Friday night’s incident on Lakeview Drive. The same research found that 66% of crashes in the study occurred on roads with little or no lighting, and that a majority, 52.1%, happened in rural areas compared to 41% in urban areas and 6.9% in small urban areas.
Speeding and Repeat Offenses Common in County Data
Fresno State’s data also showed that 1,751 fatal crashes happened in Fresno County between 2010 and 2023, with 34% of drivers recorded speeding at an average of 23 miles per hour over the posted limit. GV Wire reported a related but distinct figure, noting that alcohol- and drug-related driving crashes in the county led to 1,751 deaths over that same period — a statistic the outlet did not equate with the crash count.
GV Wire’s reporting also found that among drivers involved in Fresno County’s fatal crashes, 44% had prior violations, 15% had a previous crash on record, and 14% had a prior DUI conviction. Most of those crashes, the outlet noted, happened under seemingly unremarkable conditions: 89% occurred on level roads, 80% on straight stretches, and 87% in clear weather.
Across the broader 12-county Central Valley region studied, researchers tallied 8,790 fatal crashes between 2010 and 2023, according to GV Wire’s review of the data. California law defines impaired driving under Vehicle Code Section 23152, which for purposes of related statute measures blood-alcohol percentage by weight based on grams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood or grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath, according to California Legislative Information.
Friday’s crash on Lakeview Drive caused no injuries, but it left a car perched on a dock just feet from the water — a vivid reminder of how quickly a night drive can go wrong on north Fresno’s streets.
