A woman accused of punching her husband in the chest led Austin police on a brief chase Tuesday before barricading herself inside her vehicle near Cameron Road, triggering a SWAT standoff that ended with her arrest around 6:30 p.m.
Domestic Dispute Sparks Police Response
Officers were first called to a home in the 1100 block of Gatehouse Drive after a man reported that his wife had punched him in the chest, according to CBS Austin. Police said the woman, identified as Betty Guillen, left the home in a vehicle and was believed to have taken a gun with her. KXAN reported that a disturbance call came in at 3:47 p.m. and that the suspect left the scene before stopping her car.
CBS Austin reported that Guillen stopped in the 8100 block of Cameron Road, near Rutherford Lane, around 3:47 p.m. after the short pursuit. An Austin Police Department SWAT unit then responded to the scene, where a person remained barricaded inside the vehicle through the afternoon.
Standoff Ends Without Further Incident
Guillen stayed inside the vehicle and ignored officers' commands for more than an hour as the standoff dragged on near the busy Northeast Austin intersection. She eventually got out of the vehicle and was taken into custody around 6:30 p.m., per the same account. SWAT removed the person from the vehicle. She was evaluated at a hospital before being taken to jail, CBS Austin reported.
Officers recovered a gun from the vehicle after Guillen was taken into custody, the report notes. The Austin Police Department said the scene was being broken down once the standoff concluded, according to the station's report.
The presence of a gun raises the stakes in domestic-violence calls: the U.S. Justice Department says a woman’s risk of intimate-partner homicide increases by 500% when an abuser has access to a firearm. The statistic describes a broader national risk, not a finding about what occurred in this case. The department’s domestic-violence guidance highlights why reports of a gun can prompt heightened concern during police response.
Booked Into Travis County Jail
Guillen was booked into the Travis County Jail on charges of assault causing bodily injury to a family member, evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, and resisting arrest, the outlet reported. No additional details on her court date or legal representation were available.
Texas law defines assault to include intentionally, knowingly or recklessly causing bodily injury to another person, including a spouse. The state Penal Code sets out that definition; the booking charges are allegations, not a determination of guilt. Texas also recognizes magistrates’ emergency protective orders for people arrested on family-violence offenses, as described in the state court system’s protective-order rules. The article does not say whether an order was issued in this case.
