A Northeastern Chinese restaurant chain known for its Harbin-inspired menu and baijiu cocktail list has signed on for a new Long Island outpost. Dong Bei Restaurant & Bar has leased a 2,000-square-foot space at New Hyde Park Place, the revamped commercial strip straddling the Nassau-Queens border, with an opening targeted for early 2027.
The lease was first reported by the New York Real Estate Journal, which noted the deal was signed in late October and will bring both sit-down dining and takeout to the property. The new restaurant will serve Northeastern Chinese cuisine inspired by Harbin, China, giving Long Islanders access to a menu style that's currently only available at Dong Bei's existing locations in Manhattan and Jersey City.
Kevin, who owns Dong Bei Restaurant & Bar locations across the New York City region, said the New Hyde Park spot will bring Northeastern Chinese flavors to the area and that the restaurant plans to welcome the local community with both dine-in and takeout options, according to the trade publication's report. The restaurant's own website describes a menu specializing in hearty, aromatic dishes rooted in Dongbei, or Manchurian, culinary traditions, alongside a curated selection of Chinese baijiu, craft cocktails and regional beers, according to Dong Bei's website.
A Strip Built Around Hospital Foot Traffic
Jason Sobel, a broker with RIPCO Real Estate, co-brokered the lease alongside Benjamin Namdar of KSR Realty, per the New York Real Estate Journal. Sobel said Dong Bei brings distinctive Chinese cuisine and adds dining variety to New Hyde Park Place, and described the broader property as being invested in and developed as a destination for the community. Namdar, for his part, called Dong Bei a strong addition to New Hyde Park Place and said the deal shows an opportunity for established restaurant operators in the market, the same report noted.
The commercial property at 271-02 Union Turnpike was renamed New Hyde Park Place, according to qns.com, which reported that BenArt Realty owns the site while RIPCO Real Estate serves as its broker. The property spans 10,441 square feet, as Long Island Business News reported, sitting on the Nassau-Queens border. The restaurants there are positioned to serve doctors, nurses, employees and families who spend time at the nearby medical center campus, which includes Cohen Children's Medical Center and Katz Women's Hospital.
Facelift Underway Alongside New Tenants
Work on the building's facade has already been completed, and installation of new fencing is underway, the trade publication's report said. Additional signage is planned, along with parking lot improvements slated for after winter. Qns.com's reporting described the broader investment as including a new facade and upgrades to the property's 40-space parking lot.
Dong Bei joins a restaurant lineup at New Hyde Park Place that already includes Tous Les Jours, Soy or Spicy, Guac Shop and Buffalo Wild Wings GO. Long Island Business News reported that Sobel and Sydney Schmitt are also marketing a separate, remaining 2,000-square-foot restaurant space at the property that was formerly occupied by Vietnamese Kitchen & Bar. Redefine Meals, which also recently signed a lease at the strip, is expected to open in the fall, per the New York Real Estate Journal's reporting.
Part Of A Broader Expansion
The New Hyde Park location will mark fresh territory for Dong Bei, which currently operates three Manhattan locations, including one that opened in the Financial District just weeks earlier, according to Jersey Digs. That outlet also reported that Dong Bei is planning its fourth location on the ground floor of 500 Jersey Avenue in Jersey City. With New Hyde Park now added to the pipeline, the chain is pushing further into the outer boroughs and Long Island suburbs as it builds out its footprint across the region.
