A two-story house on the 600 block of Geranium Street NW erupted in flames before dawn Sunday, sending six people to the hospital — three of them with critical injuries, including a man, a woman and a child. Firefighters arrived around 4:50 a.m. to find heavy fire and smoke pouring from both the front and back of the home.

WJLA reported on October 11 that D.C. Fire and EMS had taken two adults and three children to the hospital, with a man and a boy suffering critical injuries and a woman and two other children sustaining injuries described as not life-threatening.

The fire was on Geranium Street NW in Northwest D.C. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, and officials have not released the identities or long-term medical conditions of those hurt.

Emergency Response Closed Nearby Streets

The scope of the firefighting operation was large enough to disrupt travel across several nearby blocks. DC Alerts reported road closures spanning the 600–800 blocks of Geranium Street NW between 9th Street and Blair Road, along with the 7300–7400 blocks of Blair Road NW, while crews worked the scene.

The fire was extinguished shortly before 7 a.m., more than two hours after firefighters arrived at approximately 4:50 a.m.

Fire Safety Resources

Nationally, 2023 data show 5.8 deaths and 19.7 civilian injuries per 1,000 residential structure fires, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Even so, the volume of fire emergencies the city handles is significant. Between 2016 and 2022, DC Fire and EMS responded to 189,801 fire-related emergency calls, including 15,770 classified as highest-priority, according to a joint study by The Lab @ DC and DC FEMS. Nationally, cooking equipment, heating equipment and electrical malfunctions remain the top three causes of home structure fires, with cooking responsible for the largest share, according to fire statistics published by The Zebra.

District homeowners in single-family dwellings can request free, department-installed smoke alarms and in-home safety evaluations through DC Fire and EMS's A'sia Sutton Smoke Alarm Giveaway and Installation Program.

The Geranium Street Area

The area includes a commercial strip at Georgia Avenue and Geranium Street NW.

Sunday’s fire adds to a string of residential blazes Hoodline has tracked across the District and surrounding region this year, including a recent Anacostia apartment fire that displaced a resident and his dog. The cause of the Geranium Street fire remains under investigation, and officials have not said when that determination might be complete.
