New York City Ballet's George Balanchine's The Nutcracker is headed to downtown Detroit this November, and this time the audience won't just be watching from a seat — they'll feel like they're standing inside the Stahlbaums' holiday party, the snow-covered forest and the Land of the Sweets. The production is coming to Cosm Detroit's 87-foot-diameter LED Dome as part of a Shared Reality presentation rolling out at all Cosm locations next month.

According to The Detroit News, fans can see New York City Ballet perform the holiday classic in Shared Reality at all Cosm locations this November. The presentation was filmed during the company's 2025-26 season, and the version coming to the dome includes the production's signature 41-foot Christmas tree, the snow scene, hundreds of dancers, musicians and young performers, plus Tchaikovsky's score.

What sets the Cosm version apart is the sense of being pulled inside the action rather than watching it from the house seats. The audience experience includes going inside the production, where viewers will feel like an onstage guest at the Stahlbaums' holiday party before being transported to the forest for the iconic Snow Scene and finally to the second act's Land of the Sweets. New York City Ballet artistic director Jonathan Stafford said audiences will experience George Balanchine's The Nutcracker as never before through the venue's immersive technology, per the same report.

A Holiday Fixture Gets a New Home Downtown

George Balanchine's The Nutcracker is not new to the stage — it first premiered in New York City on February 2, 1954, decades after Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein established New York City Ballet in 1948, according to New York City Ballet. The company typically stages 47 performances of the ballet each year, drawing more than 100,000 people to Lincoln Center annually, the Detroit outlet reports.

That scale is part of what makes the production notable in the first place: New York City Ballet says its full Nutcracker calls for more than 150 dancers and musicians, 40 stagehands, and more than 120 children split across two alternating casts, with a one-ton Christmas tree that grows from 12 feet to its full 41-foot height onstage.

What's Still Unknown

Cosm has not yet released showtimes or ticket prices for the Detroit engagement, saying those details will be announced at a later date. The shows will feature a themed food menu to enhance the experience, though specifics on the menu have not been shared.

Detroit's Newest Big-Screen Venue

Cosm Detroit is the company's fourth venue, following earlier openings in Los Angeles and Dallas in 2024 and in Atlanta earlier this year, as the Detroit Free Press reported. The downtown venue spans 70,000 square feet across three levels with an overall capacity of 1,500 guests, and the company expects to be open daily, producing hundreds of events across the calendar.

Since opening, Cosm Detroit's lineup has already included Shared Reality screenings of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and The Matrix alongside sports programming, according to Little Guide Detroit. The venue's three primary spaces — The Dome, The Hall and The Deck — give Cosm room to mix large-format entertainment with its sports and event programming, and the Nutcracker presentation marks its first major holiday ballet offering.
