New York City is getting a brief taste of summer before autumn makes a forceful comeback. Tuesday starts near 60 degrees under mostly cloudy skies, but the city should warm to around 73 with mostly sunny conditions and south winds building through the afternoon.
Wednesday looks even warmer, with a high near 78 before a cold front moves through during the evening. That is a sharper turn than last week’s forecast suggested, and the latest outlook from an earlier Hoodline forecast is now filling in the timing of the cooler air.
Sunny Thursday Leads Into Friday Storms
Thursday should be sunny and seasonable, with a high near 66, but showers and thunderstorms could arrive after 2 a.m. Friday. Friday’s forecast calls for widespread showers and thunderstorms, a high around 71, and an 80% chance of rain.
The National Weather Service says a half-inch to an inch of rain is a reasonable starting point, with heavier totals possible if thunderstorms become more numerous. Some vulnerable coastal locations around the wider New York metro could also briefly approach minor flood levels during Tuesday’s morning and early-afternoon high tide cycle.
Weekend Brings Wind And A Big Temperature Drop
Friday night may stay unsettled before skies clear, but northwest winds will become the bigger story. Saturday is forecast to be sunny but only around 52 degrees, with strong gusts that could reach 40 mph around the New York City metro area.
Sunday should remain sunny, though cool, with a high near 56 and a low around 47 Sunday night. In practical terms, the week goes from light layers and warm afternoons to rain gear, heavier jackets and a firm reminder that October is not required to pick one mood.
