A Separate Robbery Reported At The Same Station

A separate report distinct from this case describes another robbery at the same 170 Street station, this one involving a 61-year-old woman. According to Shore News Network, that incident occurred at approximately 11:45 a.m. on a Wednesday on the same northbound D platform, when an unidentified individual forcibly grabbed the woman's purse. It is not established whether the two reports describe the same event or two separate incidents at the station.

The 170 Street case is one of several recent Bronx subway robberies NYPD has publicized in recent weeks. On September 30, the department sought help identifying four individuals accused of robbing a 29-year-old man elsewhere in the Bronx, a case detailed by PIX11, in which two individuals allegedly held the victim's arms while two others went through his pockets and took a wallet and cellphone worth more than $1,000. No injuries were reported in that incident.

Pattern Of Knife-Related Robberies Also Under Investigation

On October 17, an 18-year-old man was robbed on the northbound platform of the East 180th Street subway station at around 10 p.m., per the same Shore News Network account, which reported that the suspect brandished a knife and forcibly took the teen's cellphone, credit card and cash before fleeing on foot. Separately, News 12 Bronx has reported that a man connected to three Bronx robberies targeting women's jewelry, including incidents on August 28 and September 3, remained at large. In one of those cases, the outlet reported, the suspect threatened a woman with a knife, pushed her to the ground and took her necklace, with none of the victims suffering life-threatening injuries.

What The Numbers Say About Transit Crime

The trend data on subway robberies this year is mixed depending on the measure. ABC7 New York reported that transit robberies were up 15 percent year to date, rising to 136 compared to 118 during the same period the prior year, even as year-to-date transit felonies were down 1.5 percent and assaults were down 5.5 percent. The network also noted that police have called 2025 the safest year on the city's subways since 2009.

ABC7 New York also reported that the NYPD is adding 175 officers underground; the governor has already added 750 officers.
