A 72-year-old man was walking in front of a pharmacy on Metropolitan Avenue in Parkchester two weeks ago when a stranger walked up and punched him in the face without saying a word, according to police. The blow sent the victim to the ground, leaving him with cut knees and facial swelling before the attacker took off on foot.
The attack happened on September 15 at 1320 Metropolitan Avenue, the address of Bronx Pharmacy, a community pharmacy along one of Parkchester's main commercial corridors, according to the NPPES NPI Registry. Police say the suspect approached the victim and struck him on the right side of his face without any exchange of words, as reported by amNewYork. EMS treated the victim at the scene, but he refused further medical attention.
The NYPD released surveillance images of the suspected assailant Tuesday, describing him as last seen wearing a blue hat, a blue jacket, and brown jeans. Investigators are asking anyone who recognizes the man to come forward, per the same amNewYork report.
A Felony Charge Under New York's “Granny's Law”
Because the victim is 72, any suspect eventually charged in the assault would likely face Assault in the Second Degree, a Class D violent felony under New York Penal Law § 120.05(12), according to the New York State Senate. The statute, sometimes called “Granny's Law,” applies when someone intentionally injures a person 65 or older and is more than ten years younger than the victim. A conviction on that charge carries a mandatory minimum of two years and up to seven years in state prison, along with fines of up to $5,000, according to the NY Penal Law.
The law traces back to May 2008, when it was signed following public outrage over unprovoked street muggings of elderly Queens residents Rose Morat and Solange Elizee, per the New York State Senate. Before that law took effect, causing physical injury to an elderly person without a weapon was generally treated as a Class A misdemeanor rather than a felony.
Precinct With a Crime Drop Still Watching Street Violence
The assault falls under the jurisdiction of the NYPD's 43rd Precinct, headquartered on Fteley Avenue in Soundview, which patrols Parkchester along with Soundview, Castle Hill, Unionport, and Clason Point. That precinct recorded 368 fewer major crime complaints in midyear 2026 compared with the same stretch of 2025, the largest absolute drop of any precinct in the Bronx, according to Vital City.
Still, isolated violent incidents have continued to rattle the area. Hoodline has covered a courtyard shooting in nearby Unionport on September 26, 2026, 11 days after this attack, part of a string of recent violent incidents across the 43rd Precinct's patrol area.
Parkchester itself is a dense, 0.33-square-mile planned residential development with 33,602 residents as of the 2020 Census, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
