A shooting in the Pomaria area of Newberry County left one person dead and another airlifted to a trauma center late Friday night, and investigators say they are now searching for whoever opened fire. Deputies connected two separate sets of 911 calls — one reporting shots fired near Folk and Holloway streets, the other reporting a vehicle shot into a short distance away on Peak Road — into a single, ongoing investigation.
According to WYFF News 4, deputies are actively searching for suspects following the deadly shooting. The trouble began shortly before 11 p.m. Friday, when authorities received a call reporting multiple shots fired in the area of Folk and Holloway streets in Pomaria, as detailed by WIS-TV.
Dispatch then received additional calls reporting that a car had been shot into on Peak Road, just a short distance from where the first call originated, the station's report states. Responding deputies and first responders arrived to find two people suffering from gunshot wounds between the two locations.
One Victim Dead, Second Airlifted for Treatment
One of the two victims was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second was airlifted to an area trauma center for treatment, per the same account from WIS-TV. That victim's current condition has not been released, according to WLTX.
The Newberry County Coroner's Office has not yet released the name of the person who died, saying it will do so once identification and notifications to family have been completed, WIS-TV reports. WLTX reported that Sheriff Lee Foster said investigators connected both sets of calls as part of the same incident, though no suspect information has been made public.
Second Violent Shooting in Newberry County This Month
The Pomaria shooting comes just weeks after another gunfire incident rattled Newberry County. On October 17, officers responded to a block party near Wise and Holloway streets where four victims were injured and taken to Newberry Health and Prisma Health facilities for treatment, according to WIS-TV's separate report on that case.
Four suspects were arrested earlier in that investigation, and two more — 18-year-old Zymere Jabarri Williams and 20-year-old Quentin Devon Johnson Jr., both of Newberry County — were taken into custody Thursday morning, bringing the total number charged in the block party shooting to six. It remains unclear whether the two cases are connected in any way; the Pomaria shooting investigation is still ongoing, with no arrests announced as of Saturday.
