One person was killed and another injured early Monday, October 19, 2026, after a multi-vehicle crash shut down part of Interstate 20 near Cedar Ridge Drive in Duncanville, officials say. Emergency crews responded to the scene around 3:11 a.m., finding at least two vehicles involved, with one person pronounced dead at the scene and another rushed to a hospital for treatment.
According to WFAA, traffic was diverted onto the service road in the area while crews worked the crash scene, and how long the interstate would remain affected was still unknown as of Monday morning, October 19, 2026. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, the station reports.
A Familiar, Dangerous Stretch of Freeway
This isn't the first time the Cedar Ridge Drive interchange has turned deadly. In February 2024, a tandem FedEx truck slammed into tow trucks and a sedan on eastbound I-20 near the same interchange, killing 44-year-old wrecker driver Oscar Merchan Contreras and critically injuring another tow truck operator, according to a report from WFAA at the time. Two months later, Dallas County Sheriff's Office deputies investigated an early-morning hit-and-run on westbound I-20 near Cedar Ridge Road that killed an unidentified motorcyclist, as reported by CBS News Texas.
Even outside of fatal wrecks, the corridor has been a chokepoint for commuters. A commercial box truck collision blocked the right westbound lane of I-20 near Cedar Ridge Drive during the morning commute last month, according to the Wooley Law Firm, which has tracked crash activity along the corridor.
Dallas County Leads the State in I-20 Deaths
The numbers behind this stretch of freeway are stark. Dallas County recorded 119 fatal crashes resulting in 131 deaths on Interstate 20 between 2015 and 2024, more than any other county on the highway statewide, per an analysis of federal crash data. Statewide, I-20 saw 907 fatal crashes and 980 deaths over that same decade, including 70 fatal crashes in 2024 alone.
Those figures sit inside an even larger pattern of roadway violence across Texas. The state logged 618,706 motor vehicle crashes in 2025 — roughly one every 51 seconds — resulting in 3,814 deaths and 17,975 serious injuries, according to data compiled by Reyes Law from the Texas Department of Transportation's crash records system. Texas has not gone a single calendar day without a traffic death since November 7, 2000, a streak the Texas Department of Transportation continues to track through its #EndTheStreakTX safety campaign.
Nearby Tragedies
Texas law requires drivers approaching stationary emergency vehicles or tow trucks with flashing lights to either change lanes away from the vehicle or slow to at least 20 mph below the posted speed limit, under Texas Transportation Code § 545.157. Violations are punishable as misdemeanors, according to the Texas Constitution and Statutes.
The Cedar Ridge corridor has seen other recent tragedies nearby. Last month, a woman was struck and killed while trying to cross eastbound I-20 near Wheatland Road in southern Dallas's Red Bird area, as Hoodline previously reported.
No details about the identities of those killed or injured in Monday's crash have been released, and investigators have not said whether speed or impairment played a role. WFAA has not indicated when the interstate is expected to fully reopen.
