A 13-year-old girl called 911 during an alleged assault at her Bergen County home early Saturday, prompting Oradell police to arrest her father on charges that include strangulation, simple assault and endangering the welfare of a child. David Luy, 50, was taken into custody after officers responded to the home around 2:47 a.m. and interviewed those involved.
Officers were dispatched after the girl reported a domestic disturbance involving an adult, according to Daily Voice. Oradell Police Chief David Gangemi said officers were called to the scene after the teen reported the disturbance, and that responding officers interviewed everyone present before making an arrest.
Officers Bahadourian and Viscito responded to the call and investigated the disturbance, interviewing those involved before identifying Luy as the alleged aggressor, according to police. He was charged in connection with the alleged assault of his 13-year-old daughter, per police, with the chief confirming the charges stemmed from that incident.
Charges and Custody
Luy faces three charges: endangering the welfare of a child, simple assault and strangulation. He was processed and taken to the Bergen County Jail, where he was being held pending his first court appearance.
No court docket or disposition has been made public, and the case's status beyond the initial arrest remains unclear. The specific address of the home has not been disclosed beyond its location in Oradell.
A Pattern With Long-Term Consequences
Cases involving alleged violence between family members carry effects that can outlast the initial incident. A New Jersey State Police report notes that the impact of domestic violence can create lasting emotional, psychological and physical effects that may carry over from one generation to the next, deeply affecting families and communities, according to the 2023 New Jersey State Police Domestic Violence Report.
For now, the Oradell case remains in its early stages, with Luy held in county custody and no further court proceedings yet reported.
