Orem is getting its first taste of IRONMAN, with city officials confirming the triathlon giant will bring its 70.3 series to town on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2027. The race will send athletes swimming through Deer Creek Reservoir, cycling down Provo Canyon and running through Utah Valley before the finish, marking the first time an IRONMAN-branded event has ever landed in Orem.

The announcement came by way of a City of Orem Government Facebook post published Tuesday night, which declared that “IRONMAN’s new home in Utah is Orem” and noted the organization is teaming up with Utah County and Explore Utah Valley to put on the race. According to Fox 13, the course covers a 1.2-mile swim in Deer Creek Reservoir, a 56-mile bike leg and a 13.1-mile run, with the event marking the return of IRONMAN competition to Utah altogether.

Where exactly the race wraps up depends on which outlet you read. The Daily Herald reports the bike route ends at Orem’s Scera Park, with the 13.1-mile run following an out-and-back route along the Provo River Parkway Trail, while the same outlet also describes the overall race as ending at Orem City Center Park. Either way, the course threads through some of Utah Valley’s most scenic terrain before athletes cross the line in Orem.

A World Championship Qualifier Lands in Utah Valley

This isn’t just a one-off local race. The Daily Herald reports that IRONMAN 70.3 Utah will double as a qualifying event for the 2028 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, giving competitors a reason to travel from well outside the region to earn a slot. Utah County Commissioner Skyler Beltran called the race a sign of the county’s momentum, telling the Daily Herald it is “a testament to the county’s growing sports economy and emergence as a premier destination for sporting events.”

Orem Mayor Karen McCandless struck a similarly welcoming tone, saying the city is “excited to welcome IRONMAN athletes and their families to our community,” per the Daily Herald. IRONMAN Regional Director Todd Fitzgerald went further, telling Fox 13 that organizers believe “Orem has all the ingredients to become one of the premier IRONMAN 70.3 destinations in North America.”

Behind the scenes, the deal has more staying power than a single summer event. Citizen Portal reports that Utah County commissioners approved hosting the IRONMAN competition for 2027, 2028 and 2029, with Orem and Provo serving as partner cities for all three years.

What Orem Expects to Gain

City officials are framing the race as a significant economic draw. KSL reports that officials expect thousands of people to come to Orem over the life of the three-year agreement, with the event expected to attract athletes, spectators and volunteers from across the country, and city leaders anticipating millions of dollars in economic benefit, though no Orem-specific dollar estimate has been released.

Comparable races elsewhere suggest why cities compete for IRONMAN’s business. The Intermountain Healthcare IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in St. George produced an estimated $62.1 million in direct economic impact for Washington County, according to the Spectrum, drawing nearly 6,000 athletes from all 50 states and 104 countries and generating more than 99,000 hotel room nights at an average stay of 5.5 nights. The paper also reported that three IRONMAN-branded events combined brought more than $121 million in outside money to southwestern Utah.

St. George hosted IRONMAN races every year since 2010, the Spectrum notes, but that streak ended in May 2025 when the city held its final endurance race after a 15-year run. KUER reported that local officials said population growth had made the logistics of hosting the race unsustainable, and that Washington County planned to shift its marketing dollars toward golfing, off-road racing and mountain biking events instead. Fox 13 notes that IRONMAN 70.3 Utah last ran in the state in May 2025, when St. George hosted the final North American Championships.

Smaller-scale races also show what a new host city can expect. The first IRONMAN 70.3 event in the Tri-Cities generated an estimated $7 million to $7.5 million for the region, according to NBC Right Now, drawing 2,500 athletes and 7,500 non-athlete visitors who stayed an average of three days, with participants arriving from 18 countries.

Signing Up for the Inaugural Race

For athletes hoping to take part in Orem’s debut race, the clock is ticking. Fox 13 reports that registration for the 2027 race is scheduled to open Oct. 29, giving prospective competitors just over a week from the announcement to prepare. The Facebook post from the City of Orem directs interested athletes to IRONMAN’s official race page for more information as the city — long known locally as Family City USA — gears up to welcome its first wave of triathletes.
