Orlando police announced Wednesday that Dale Smith Jr., the former fiancé of long-missing mother Michelle Parker, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder — a stunning break in a case that has haunted the city for nearly 15 years. Parker was last seen on Nov. 17, 2011, after dropping her twin children off at Smith's home, and she has never been found.
A news conference was held Wednesday about Parker's missing-person case. WESH reports that Smith is now charged with second-degree murder, and State Attorney Monique Worrell said the charge could escalate depending on the evidence. As of Wednesday's announcement, Parker's remains have not been recovered, and the case had been described as an active investigation up until the arrest.
Parker was last known to be alive dropping her twin children at Smith's condo near Goldenrod Road and Lee Vista Boulevard in Orlando, the same day she and Smith appeared on a taped episode of The People's Court arguing over a lost engagement ring, per the same account. That dispute reportedly centered on a $5,000 ring, according to ClickOrlando. Parker's black Hummer was found abandoned the next day, Nov. 18, 2011, in the area of Walden Circle, as reported by FOX 35 Orlando.
A Trail of Evidence That Led Nowhere for Years
In the weeks after Parker disappeared, investigators recovered another piece of evidence tied to her final movements. Sheriff's divers discovered her iPhone under an Orange County bridge in December 2011, the same month she vanished, per the WESH report. For years afterward, the case produced leads but no resolution — Smith was publicly named a person of interest, yet, as CBS News reported at the time, he had not been arrested and no charges had been filed against him.
Smith has consistently denied having anything to do with Parker's disappearance, according to the same WESH account. The gap between suspicion and charges stretched on for more than a decade, alongside searches and renewed investigative work.
Searches Turned Up Empty Over the Years
As recently as August 2023, Orlando police searched a home near Texas Avenue tied to the case but said nothing was found, ClickOrlando reported. That search was part of a broader pattern — police have searched several areas in Orange and Brevard counties for Parker over the years, including a retention pond near Rose Boulevard and nearby Lake Ellenor, according to the outlet.
Earlier this year, Parker's mother, Yvonne Stewart, said the emergence of new technology, like AI, gave her renewed hope that the case could finally move forward, per Spectrum News 13. At the time, police described the matter as an active investigation with no new information to share publicly, the outlet noted — a stance that held until Tuesday's arrest announcement.
What Comes Next
With Smith now formally charged, the case moves into a new phase after nearly 15 years without an arrest. Worrell said the charge could escalate depending on the evidence, as reported by WESH. Parker is remembered as a missing mother whose 2011 disappearance left her twin children and family searching for answers that, until this week, had never come.
