A car crash on Interstate 480 in Omaha sent an overhead sign crashing down onto the roadway Saturday night, blocking traffic and prompting a closure of the southbound lanes while crews worked to clear the wreckage. Emergency crews swarmed the scene as drivers were warned to steer clear of the area entirely.
According to the Omaha Police Department, a car crashed into a sign on I-480 near Martha Street, and the structure came down, blocking the roadway. The call that brought first responders to the scene initially came in as something even more dire — a rollover crash with a person possibly trapped inside the vehicle, police said.
The southbound lanes of Interstate 480 were shut down while crews worked to clean up the collapsed overhead sign structure, which had fallen across the lanes. Emergency crews remained on scene as the cleanup got underway, and drivers were urged to stay away from the area while the lanes were closed.
Conflicting Reports on Exact Crash Location
A separate account from WOWT placed a crash that blocked all southbound I-480 lanes at Arbor Street. That crash happened around 5 p.m., per WOWT's reporting, and it remains unclear whether both outlets were describing the same incident. The station reported that the Nebraska Department of Transportation advised drivers to take an alternate route because of the blocked lanes.
The discrepancy between the two locations has not been resolved. The driver, a 19-year-old man, died at the scene. Investigators said he went off the road and hit the sign’s support beam, and treated the crash as a single-vehicle incident.
A Stretch of Highway With a History
The Martha Street corridor on I-480 has seen serious crashes before. In one earlier incident, four people were hospitalized, three of them with critical injuries, following a two-car crash along the interstate, according to KETV. Another previous crash on the same stretch saw a Toyota Camry flip onto its roof with its male driver initially pinned before being extricated, while two adults riding in a Toyota Corolla were also hospitalized with serious injuries.
Drivers in the area may want to track conditions through Nebraska 511, which posts real-time updates on traffic incidents, road conditions, and active roadwork across the state. I-480 had reopened by 10:00 p.m. Saturday following the collapse.
