A 21-year-old Palisades Park man is facing charges after police say he accelerated his Camaro directly at a responding officer, then crashed the car on Route 46 in Fort Lee and ran from the scene on foot. Wilmer J. Gamezsuchite was arrested a short time later near Cumley Terrace in neighboring Leonia, according to police.

The incident began at approximately 9:10 p.m. Tuesday, when Palisades Park police received a report of a vehicle striking parked cars and fleeing the area, Police Chief George Beck said, according to Daily Voice. Officers Christian Sisco, Marc Larrea and Jasper Chau responded to 10th Street and East Palisades Boulevard, where police identified a white Chevrolet Camaro as the vehicle involved and located it parked outside 460 Bergen Boulevard.

Officer Says Driver Accelerated Toward Him

Officer Sisco positioned his patrol car in front of the Camaro and approached the driver, according to the police account relayed by the outlet. Beck said the driver then accelerated directly toward Sisco before speeding away from the scene.

The Camaro ultimately crashed on Route 46 eastbound near Main Street in Fort Lee, per the same account. Occupants of the vehicle were seen running from the crash site, and police said Gamezsuchite was found a short distance away near Cumley Terrace in Leonia.

Charges and Next Steps

Gamezsuchite, identified as a 21-year-old Bergen County man from Palisades Park, was charged with eluding, according to police. New Jersey's statute on resisting arrest and eluding officers is codified at Title 2C:29-2 under the New Jersey Legislature's records, titled Resisting Arrest, Eluding Officer.

He was processed and released pending a court appearance scheduled for Nov. 2 at Bergen County Superior Court. Beck credited the swift resolution to his department's officers and their coordination with neighboring departments, saying, “Officers' decisive actions and partnerships with Fort Lee and Leonia ensured the reckless individual was swiftly and safely removed from the streets.”
