A 53-year-old Parlier man has been identified as the suspect shot by law enforcement after allegedly opening fire on a police patrol car near an elementary school, then leading officers on a pursuit that ended when his pickup truck crashed into a fence at Parlier High School. Jose Garcia was left in critical condition after the August 15 confrontation, which unfolded in Parlier while a weekend basketball camp was underway.
The incident began around 10:10 a.m. near Merced and H streets, close to Cesar E. Chavez Elementary School, when a Parlier Police officer radioed for emergency backup after reporting that a gunman had struck their patrol car with gunfire, according to Mid Valley Times. Garcia was publicly named as the suspect injured in the shooting, according to KMPH.
A Fresno County Sheriff's deputy and a Selma Police officer spotted Garcia driving a pickup truck, touching off a multi-agency pursuit that ended just before 10:30 a.m., when Garcia crashed into a fence at Parlier High School on Fig Avenue near Third and Fourth streets, per GV Wire.
Students Locked Down During Gymnasium Camp
Participants in a weekend basketball camp at Parlier High School were not impacted, and authorities provided them a route to their vehicles. The pursuit took place near an elementary school and ended at a high school where a camp was underway.
After the crash, a Fresno County Sheriff's deputy and a Selma Police officer fired their weapons at Garcia, striking him multiple times, the outlet reports. No officers were shot during the exchange, though one Selma officer sustained an arm injury during the response, according to the same account.
Charges Filed After Hospitalization
Garcia was transported in critical condition to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, where he was later electronically booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges including attempted murder, assault on an officer, evading police, and resisting arrest, according to the Fresno County Sheriff's Office. Detectives with the sheriff's office recovered a firearm in Garcia's possession near his pickup truck and took over as the lead agency investigating the incident under case number 26-9535, the agency says.
In total, four law enforcement personnel were directly involved in the response: two officers from the Parlier Police Department, one officer from the Selma Police Department, and one deputy from the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, according to GV Wire. The coordinated response illustrates how neighboring Central Valley departments lean on each other during violent emergencies in small communities that often lack the staffing to handle such incidents alone.
California's Use-of-Force Standard
Under California Penal Code Section 835a, updated in 2020 by Assembly Bill 392, officers may use deadly force when necessary to defend against an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury, based on the totality of the circumstances, or to apprehend a fleeing person for a qualifying felony when the officer reasonably believes the person will cause death or serious bodily injury unless immediately apprehended, according to FindLaw.
The response involved officers from three agencies, and the incident unfolded near an elementary school before ending at a high school.
