A passenger was killed and a driver suffered serious injuries Tuesday afternoon after their car slammed into a pillar inside a downtown Santa Barbara parking structure, prompting a temporary shutdown of the facility as police, firefighters and paramedics rushed to treat the two people trapped inside. The single-vehicle crash happened at about 4:54 p.m. on Oct. 6, 2026, inside City Lot 10 at 600 Anacapa Street.

The crashed vehicle had two people inside when it struck a pillar inside the parking structure, according to KSBY. The passenger suffered major injuries and, despite lifesaving efforts from first responders, died at the scene, the station reported. The driver also suffered serious injuries and was quickly transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, per the same account.

Santa Barbara police officers were first on scene and began providing lifesaving medical care to the occupants, and fire department personnel and paramedics arrived within minutes to continue emergency treatment, according to Noozhawk. Access to the parking structure was shut down for a time following the crash, the outlet reported. The name of the person who died, reportedly the passenger, has not been released.

Conflicting Accounts of the Vehicle and Impact

Exactly what kind of car was involved, and precisely where inside the garage it struck, remains unclear from competing accounts. Noozhawk reported that a white sedan with major front-end damage entered the structure from Ortega Street and did not slow down before slamming into a wall. The Santa Barbara Independent, however, reported that officers arrived to find a white Tesla that had collided with a pillar on the ground floor of the lot near the exit.

Separately, Edhat reported crash near Anacapa, Ortega, citing reporter John Palminteri, that the crash occurred just before 5 p.m. near the intersection of Anacapa and Ortega streets, with Santa Barbara police, fire crews and AMR all on scene. The crash remained under active investigation as of 6 p.m. the day it occurred, with no cause confirmed.

The City Council adopted the final Safe Streets 4 All Action Plan on July 28, 2026.

No cause has been determined for Tuesday's crash inside City Lot 10, and investigators have not said whether speed, mechanical failure or another factor played a role. The identities of both the driver and the passenger who died have not been made public, and the case remains open.
