Paterson residents have a new place to throw punches and break a sweat. The Paterson Police Department took part in the opening of a boxing and fitness space at the Christopher Hope Community Center on Wednesday, September 30, giving the neighborhood another option for staying active.
The department announced the opening in a Paterson Police Department Facebook post, describing the new space as open and ready for residents to use at the community center. According to the post, the space is meant to do more than just offer a workout — officers said it can help residents build confidence and connect with their community.
Police Frame Fitness as a Community-Building Tool
The department's post leaned heavily into the idea that fitness and neighborhood strength go hand in hand. Officers wrote that programs like this one create positive opportunities, especially for young people, and help strengthen local neighborhoods overall. The post also framed the gym as part of a broader department push encouraging residents to get involved, stay active and look out for one another.
The new boxing space offers residents a place to focus on fitness, alongside the post's emphasis on community strength. Officers also emphasized the structure that comes with boxing training specifically, noting that it requires discipline and consistency — themes they said will shape the future for those who take part.
A Center With a History Serving Local Youth
The Christopher Hope Community Center, located on Temple Street, has hosted youth-focused programming before. The Paterson Times has reported that the center previously housed the city's Total Lifestyle program, an effort aimed at assisting young people who were at risk of offending or who had already offended. The city's own facility listing places the center at 60 Temple St.
Paterson's new gym also arrives against a backdrop of state-supported boxing programs elsewhere in New Jersey. The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General has previously announced funding for youth boxing programs in Paterson, and a separate announcement from the same office described a yearlong program for almost two dozen youth at two Paterson boxing clubs, with boxing and fitness training, workshops and field trips. Camden runs a similarly structured effort through its own City of Camden boxing program, pairing training in boxing fundamentals with fitness and life-skills instruction.
For now, Paterson Police have not detailed who will run day-to-day operations at the Christopher Hope Center's new space, what hours it will keep or who exactly is eligible to join. What the department has made clear is its intent: another option for residents to get moving, build confidence and, in its words, strengthen the neighborhoods around them.
