A pedestrian was left in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle near downtown Las Vegas, with the crash shutting down Wyoming Avenue at Commerce Street on Tuesday night. Police say the pedestrian's injuries, while serious, are not considered life-threatening.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said the crash happened around 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Commerce and Wyoming, according to KSNV. Officers are investigating the vehicle-pedestrian collision, and Wyoming remains closed at Commerce. Motorists have been asked to seek alternate routes while the investigation continues.

The intersection sits at the edge of the Arts District, which is known for its galleries, restaurants, and bars.

A Corridor With a Recent History of Crashes

This is not the first serious crash near this stretch of Wyoming Avenue. Back in January, emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle collision at Industrial Road and Wyoming Avenue that sent one person to the hospital, a crash Hoodline previously reported. In August, a pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries a short distance away on East Charleston Boulevard near South Main Street after being pinned between two vehicles when a car unexpectedly lurched forward, according to the Ace Law Group, with police reporting no impairment in that incident.

University Medical Center's Trauma Center is Southern Nevada's only Level I Adult Trauma Center and treats more than 14,000 trauma cases a year, per the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Pedestrians Make Up Nearly Half of Local Traffic Deaths

The crash arrives amid a broader pattern of pedestrian vulnerability across the valley. Within Metro's jurisdiction, pedestrians accounted for 42 of the 90 total traffic fatalities recorded through late September, nearly half of all local traffic deaths, according to the Nevada Globe. Metro had already logged more than 200 total pedestrian collisions by early spring.

Statewide, preliminary figures from the Nevada Department of Public Safety's Office of Traffic Safety show 63 pedestrians were killed in traffic collisions between January 1 and August 31, a slight decline from 65 during the same stretch in 2025, as the Las Vegas Sun reports that overall traffic fatalities statewide dropped nearly 12 percent over the same eight-month period. Nevada crash figures also show that roughly 63 percent of pedestrian fatalities statewide happen in locations without a marked crosswalk, a trend FOX5 Las Vegas has linked to the fact that urban roadways account for roughly 90 percent of all fatal pedestrian crashes in the state.

Driver Duty and Pedestrian Right-of-Way Under State Law

Nevada law places specific obligations on both drivers and pedestrians. Under Nevada Revised Statute 484B.280, drivers must exercise due care to avoid colliding with pedestrians on any street or near transit stops; an additional penalty applies if a driver is the proximate cause of a crash while violating the section, per Justia Law. That duty of care applies whether or not a pedestrian is crossing inside a marked crosswalk. Separately, NRS 484B.287 addresses pedestrians crossing outside marked or unmarked crosswalks.

Questions Remain About the Crash

Police have not yet said whether speed or impairment were factors in the collision.
