A pedestrian was left in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle near Torrey Pines Drive and Celeste Avenue in west Las Vegas Thursday night, police say. The crash happened after 7 p.m. near Alta Drive, and officers remained on scene continuing their investigation as the case developed into Friday.
According to FOX5 Vegas, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said the pedestrian was transported to the hospital in critical condition after being struck near the Torrey Pines and Celeste intersection by a 2000 Honda CR-V. Police said the driver remained at the scene, was not impaired, and failed to see and stop for the pedestrian. The investigation is ongoing.
The crash adds to a troubling run of pedestrian collisions along the same corridor this year. Less than three weeks earlier, on September 12, a pedestrian was hospitalized after being hit near West Washington Avenue and North Torrey Pines Drive at roughly 8:06 p.m., a collision that occurred after dark and resulted in non-life-threatening injuries, according to an account from Ace Law Group. Hoodline later covered that Washington Avenue crash.
A Corridor With a Deadly History
Torrey Pines Drive has seen repeated severe pedestrian crashes well before this week's incident. On July 3, a 66-year-old pedestrian was critically injured at Sahara Avenue and Torrey Pines Drive when a left-turning vehicle driven by a juvenile struck him; he later died from his injuries, as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which noted police said the driver remained at the scene and showed no signs of impairment.
Months earlier, on April 29, a 30-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries in a hit-and-run at Lake Mead Boulevard and Torrey Pines Drive, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
Pedestrians Make Up Nearly Half of 2026's Traffic Deaths
The crash lands amid a grim year-end tally for Las Vegas traffic safety. As of September 30, Metro police had recorded 90 traffic fatalities in its jurisdiction for 2026, with pedestrians accounting for 42 of those deaths, according to the Nevada Globe. Hoodline previously reported on that milestone following a separate fatal crash on the Las Vegas Strip.
Statewide, the picture is somewhat improved: preliminary data from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety showed 230 traffic fatalities recorded through August 2026 across Nevada, an 11.88 percent decrease from the 261 fatalities logged over the same period in 2025. Even so, state officials have flagged pedestrian safety as a persistent concern.
What Nevada Law Says About Fault
Nevada law lays out specific duties for both drivers and pedestrians at intersections. Under Nevada Revised Statute 484B.283, drivers must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing within marked or unmarked intersection crosswalks, slowing or stopping as needed; failing to do so can bring civil penalties up to $395. Pedestrians, meanwhile, have obligations under NRS 484B.287, which concerns mid-block crossings.
Nevada's modified comparative negligence statute, NRS 41.141, also shapes how civil claims unfold after crashes like this one: an injured pedestrian can still pursue damages from a driver as long as their own share of fault doesn't exceed 50 percent, allowing partial recovery even when a pedestrian was crossing outside a designated crosswalk. No information about fault in Thursday's crash has been released, and police have not disclosed details about the driver involved.
Metro police say the investigation remains active, and no further details have been released about the identity of the pedestrian or the circumstances that led to the crash. This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
