A pedestrian died Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Pecos Road and Hacienda Avenue in southeast Las Vegas. Police said the person was taken to a local hospital, where they later died, while the driver stayed at the scene as investigators worked to piece together what happened.
Dispatchers received the collision report at about 7:11 a.m., according to Fox5 Vegas. The pedestrian had not been publicly identified as of Monday, per KTNV, and police said their investigation remained ongoing. The public was asked to avoid the area while officers worked the scene, as News 3 Las Vegas also reported.
Accounts of what role impairment may have played in the crash align. Fox5, KTNV and News 3 all reported that police did not believe impairment was a factor in the collision. No citations or charges stemming from the crash have been confirmed.
Part of a Rough Stretch on Las Vegas Streets
Monday's death was not an isolated event. The same stretch of days that began Thursday had already produced at least two deaths and four people hospitalized with life-threatening injuries in similar pedestrian incidents, the station's report notes. Among those, a 15-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition after being hit near Bonanza and Sandhill roads on Thursday morning, and two more pedestrians were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being struck by cars in the west valley near Torrey Pines and Alta drives and near Jones Boulevard and Rochelle Avenue.
Nevada State Police reported that a pedestrian died early Saturday after being hit by a semi-truck at the Neon Gateway interchange of Interstate 15, per the same KTNV account. Separately, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that on October 1, a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision on South Torrey Pines Drive north of West Celeste Avenue left a pedestrian with life-threatening injuries.
A Familiar, Deadly Intersection
Pecos Road and Hacienda Avenue has seen fatal traffic violence before. A double-fatality collision struck that same intersection on March 9, 2024, according to a report from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Nearby, on West Hacienda Avenue west of South Decatur Boulevard, a 63-year-old man died after being struck while riding a mobility scooter, as reported by News 3 Las Vegas.
A Deadly Year for Pedestrians Valley-Wide
Monday's fatality adds to a grim tally across LVMPD's jurisdiction this year. Fatal crashes have occurred this year, while pedestrian-related crashes tell a different story: more than 200 have occurred this year, 17 of them fatal, making pedestrian deaths account for roughly half of all fatal crashes in the Las Vegas Valley.
Police have pointed to driver behavior — speeding and failure to yield chief among them — as a persistent factor in many of these crashes, according to the outlet. LVMPD has responded by deploying a dedicated squad that patrols nightly in areas identified as high risk for dangerous traffic incidents, though the scale of this year's toll suggests the danger remains widespread. As of Monday, the investigation into the Pecos and Hacienda crash continued, with no determination of fault yet made public.
