A man died after a vehicle struck him at the intersection of Lake Creek Parkway and Pecan Park Boulevard in northwest Austin, and officers pronounced him dead at the scene. Austin police say the driver is cooperating with investigators, and a preliminary review found no signs of impairment.
An Austin Police Department notice says officers responded to the collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian at that location on October 4, 2026, though that account does not independently spell out every detail of how the fatality occurred. Per the seed reporting from KEYE, the vehicle struck a man at the intersection, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Driver Cooperating, No Impairment Found So Far
Police told KEYE that the driver has been cooperating with the investigation, and that the preliminary review found the driver was not impaired. Austin police stressed that these findings come from an early, preliminary stage of the investigation and that details about the fatality could still change as the probe continues, per the same reporting.
The crash has pushed Austin's 2026 traffic death toll to 64, making it the city's 63rd deadly traffic crash of the year, according to KEYE. That's a notable decrease from the same point last year, when the city had recorded 75 fatal crashes and 79 deaths by this date in 2025, per the same reporting. Separately, KXAN reported that as of October 4, 2026, the city had logged 64 traffic fatalities so far this year.
A Year-Over-Year Pattern in Austin's Roads
Austin finished 2025 with 99 traffic fatalities, down from 103 in 2024, KXAN reports, while 2022 still stands as the city's deadliest year on record with 122 fatalities. The city's own preliminary data, published in a blog post by the City of Austin, show 99 traffic fatalities and 301 serious injuries in 2025 — a decrease in deaths from 2024 even as serious injuries fell by 28%. Austin's Vision Zero crash viewer tracks crashes within the city's Full Purpose jurisdiction.
This isn't the only pedestrian death Austin has logged recently. KXAN also reported that a pedestrian died after an early Tuesday crash near South Congress Avenue and West William Cannon Drive, a crash authorities identified as the city's 13th fatal crash of 2026. In that incident, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver left without notifying emergency services, according to KXAN's reporting. Police say the driver in the Lake Creek Parkway case is cooperating.
Investigation Continues
Austin police have not released additional details about the identity of the man who died or further specifics of the crash. Investigators have indicated that information surrounding the fatality could change as the investigation moves forward, and the department has not announced any charges or citations connected to the case.
