A pedestrian was found dead early Thursday morning along the Katy Freeway service road at Wirt Road, prompting a Houston police investigation that was still underway as the morning commute got underway. Officers were called to the scene at about 5:45 a.m. after reports of a person lying in the road.
According to ABC13 Houston, the pedestrian was found dead along the service road of Katy Freeway at Wirt Road, and the Houston Police Department said officers responded to the call before daybreak. An investigation into the death was underway Thursday morning, the station reported.
The incident appeared to block only the inbound lanes of the service road, the outlet noted, and did not seem to affect the main lanes of the highway itself. That meant freeway traffic along one of Houston's busiest commuter corridors was largely able to continue moving even as police worked the scene near Wirt Road.
A Recurring Problem Along Houston Freeways
Thursday's death adds to a string of pedestrian fatalities that have occurred along Houston's freeway system in recent memory. Houston police investigated a fatal crash on the Katy Freeway service road near 10000 Katy Freeway in July 2025, and another fatal crash in the 18200 block of Katy Freeway in March, according to notices from the Houston Police Department. A separate pedestrian was also struck and killed on the Katy Freeway in an incident that closed westbound I-10 at the Beltway, per KHOU.
Freeway service roads are not the only trouble spots. Last month, a man was fatally struck while crossing the East Freeway after his truck reportedly ran out of gas and he tried to cross I-10 on foot to get fuel, Houston police said, as reported by Click2Houston.
Houston's Pedestrian Death Toll Among the Nation's Highest
The pattern reflects a broader safety crisis on Houston's roads. The city recorded 98 pedestrian deaths in 2023, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data cited by Click2Houston, ranking Houston third nationally behind Los Angeles, which recorded 145 deaths, and Phoenix, with 109, and ahead of New York City's 85. Nationally, 7,314 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 68,244 injured that same year, per the same outlet's reporting.
Some of Houston's most dangerous corridors have drawn particular scrutiny. A 3.5-mile section of Westheimer Road saw 36 pedestrians hit and killed between 2010 and 2023, and a one-mile stretch of that same road logged 1,100 people involved in crashes over a seven-year span, the station reported. In response, the Texas Department of Transportation has said it plans to update and enhance pedestrian crosswalks along FM 1093/Westheimer Road from I-610 to SH 6, with that project slated for 2027.
No details about the identity of the pedestrian found dead near Wirt Road, nor the circumstances surrounding the death, had been released as of Thursday morning. Houston police had not indicated whether the death was connected to a vehicle collision or another cause, and the investigation remained active.
